Default brake lights out

Hi all,

(1967 420)

My rear brake lights are out, and I'm trying to locate the brake switch. My fuse is good, the bulbs are good, and they light when I turn on the headlights...

Where is the switch that activates when you press the brake pedal? I have peered under the footpedal and I cannot see any switch or electrical wires

It's a hydraulic activated switch in a brake line near the servo under the bonnet. Actually quite a common switch. Bring it into you local auto parts store and they should be able to match it up.

Before removing the switch, cross the two wires going into the switch to make sure your brake lights then light to pin down the switch as the problem.

It looks like a medium-size nut with 2 wires coming out of it. (see pic) I don't think they go wrong very often. Usually a wire has come off or frayed off. Clean the contacts. May be okay. $10-$15 if you need buy one.

Thanks for telling me where to look. Yesterday I checked the brake switch and found no power coming in (on voltmeter) yet when I tapped the in/out wires together I observed a tiny tiny spark. Today I volt checked it again and its 14.6 volts. Lights are on again! All the fuses are good. I guess if it happens again I will try to continuity test the lines that go from the fuse box to the engine bay. Unfortunately they wrapped in that old cloth sheathing.

Sometimes you can unplug and reconnect the electrical connections to make them work again. Clean the any electrical connection anytime you are near one in these older models and you pretty much can keep them going.
