Default BW35 total oil loss

Hi chaps,
Returning from a drive out in my 62 mk2 auto. I had travelled around 20 miles mixed driving when suddenly the revs rose and the speed fell away. I kept revving the engine to no avail.
Pulled over in a cloud of smoke. I got a tow home. The next day I had a chance to look under the car and found the Drivers right side from beyond the gearbox was covered and dripping in ATF. I also found oil that had collected on the right rear wheel. From what I can see I have all the plugs intact and no obvious signs of holes or drip marks. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Cheers H6

I have no experience with automatic transmissions other than leaks.

but to me it sounds like the torque converter "donut" split open and the fluid inside it leaked out.

another guess: Could the fluid have been pushed out through the dipstick tube?

Default Check Breather Tube

i had a similar issue where my car would dump fluid all over my garage floor. Pull the carpet back on the left side of the transmission tunnel. At about calf height there’s a rubber access plug. Remove it and check there is a rubber hose connected from the breather and is complete all the way up to the inner wing in the engine bay. This tube apparently fills with ATF and must be above the level of the outlet on the gearbox. My hose was in about 5 pieces and perished and was not connected at the breather. Problem now solved for me.

When I said total oil loss -It seemed it at the time. I have refilled the gearbox with ATF. It look just 4.5 litres.
Running the car up in the garage in L gear there seems nothing wrong - no leaks.
Next job is to find the breather tube
Many thanks guys

Then that sounds like it overheated---check your cooler/radiator.

Hi Chaps, the plot thickens...…………
I was under the impression my gearbox was a BW35. I was wrong it is a DG250.
I have tracked down the leak to what looks like an oil pressure switch (just above the speed hold solenoid) I don't know what it is .Can anyone enlighten me please?

If its a DG250 then that will be the switch which release the brake solenoid when you drive off although it does look different to the ones I have seen as the following picture.

Good morning chaps,

Thanks for all your help with this. I have been able to contact a auto box rebuilder who says I can remove the anti creep pressure switch and replace it with a blanking plug.
Hopefully this will be an end to this little problem and I can get the old girl out for the Autumn or fall as some of you guys call it.
Many thanks again

I did not comment on this thread earlier because the transmission was identified as a BW35 - which I thought strange since it should have been a DG250 (and it is). Here is the point: two years ago, after a highway run, and at a stoplight in city traffic, my 1966 Mk 2 DG250 transmission shifted into neutral. I managed to get it into D (the column lever did not move on its own!) and to carry on for a block, but this scene was repeated a number of times as I headed towards a good transmission shop...my rear view mirror showed me the trail of fluid left behind. Finally getting to the shop the shifting to neutral was just about continuous. In order to quickly determine the source of the leak (because on examination on the lift it was not obvious at first) they put more fluid in and sent me around the block. The transmission shifted properly at first and then reverted to the behaviour described above. Back on the lift, underside cleaned off, engine put in gear....and there it was: fluid shooting out of that "hill hold" pressure valve (which I had disconnected years before ...I like the creeping of the car In D). The honest and resourceful transmission man did exactly what yours suggests. The threaded fitting for the valve was blanked off with a bolt. Problem solved! Fluid replenished and no further problems to this day. I had forgotten about it until reading your story.
