Default Difference between Mk2 and 340

Hopefully someone can tell me exactly what the differences were between the 1967 Mk2 and the 340. Appreciate any feedback on this.

Welcome to the forum biglbft,

Just interest or looking to buy one?

The MKII was produced in 2.4, 3.4 and 3.8 litre version between late 1959 and 1967.

From September 1967, the 2.4 and 3.4 MKII were rebadged as 240 and 340. At the same time the 3.8 litre was dropped. This was a stop gap until the XJ6 was released in 1969.

Noticeable differences externally were slimmer bumpers and over riders and a reprofiled rear body section. Internally the leather upholstery was replaced with synthetic 'Ambla' and the carpet was lower quality tufted.

Mechanically the BHP was increased from 120 to 133 by a new straight port head and twin HS6 SU carburettors. Transmission was upgraded to Borg Warner 35 and Marles power steering was an option on the 340.

one small difference was in the Badging: instead of "MK-2", it was badged "340" meaning a 3.4 liter engine Small Saloon. Otherwise they are identical cars, and the 340 was in a sense, somewhat "improved" in some ways. The vinyl upholstery lasts longer than the leather.

Barry,

I was a bit savage in cutting my original reply there and left a chunk out! By reprofiling I was referring to the 1964 S-Type being effectively a MK II front with a MK X rear.

The rear bumper valance is different on the 240/340 so you cannot readily fit the early type thick bumpers. Also the 340 (from memory) was rated at a rather optimistic 210bhp, and apart from other things mentioned, did not have the fold down walnut tray tables in the seatbacks. Some say the wood was less figured, but that's not the case in my 1968 model that we've had since 1980, and still on it's original Jaguar clutch!
Cheers,
