Default Flywheel identification

I'm hoping a fellow member may be able to identify a flywheel that I've had in storage for some years. It has 104 teeth and was fitted with a 9.5inch clutch (diaphragm type) and weighs around 28lb. Stamped on the inside is the part number C18517. I've done a quick search and that part number relates to an E Type. However, they had 133 teeth NOT 104 ? Apparently the 3.8 E Type had 104 teeth but not that part number (I suppose they may have used the same centre section and simply fitted a different ring gear ??) Does anyone have any knowledge or thoughts ?

To my knowledge the 104 tooth ring gear was fitted to Mk2 etc. 2.4 litre engines, some early 3.8 engined E Types, Mk 10 3.8 & 4.2 litre engines & 3.4/3.8 S Types. The flywheel is probably drilled to accept both the 10" spring pressure plate & 9.5" diaphragm pressure plate. It might not be the original ring gear that is fitted to that flywheel of course.

Good luck!

Thanks Glyn - that crossed my mind as well. I've posted the same request on the E type forum. After all these years I daresay most flywheels have had more than one ring-gear replacement.

See minor edit above. I omitted S Types. These from notes I made when restoring my S Type. I think they were also fitted to some older models but then the flywheel not drilled for diaphragm clutch.

Cpt Q ~ With Bob's comments about this 104 tooth ring gear being correct for 3.8 E Type but flywheel weight possibly being too heavy one wonders whether it's not from a 3.8 litre 3 carb MkX version of the engine.

Glyn,
I think you are right - MK-X. With a heaver vehicle you need a heaver flywheel for take-off.

I am interested in the comment about the clutch. I have aquired a clutch disc and pressure plate and have no idea from whence it came, but, since it was in a load of mark 2 parts, it is possibly from a jaguar mark 2. What size clutches did they use? Alec G.

9.5" newer diaphragm & 10" older sprung.
