Ok i give up.. can anyone tell me what this rod hanging from 2 straps below the right side of my daimler 250 is? been working on cars for over 60 years and this one has me stumped...
Never seen anything like that but then I don't have a Daimler 250. Just out of interest and it might help finding out what it is and does, what is it attached to at either end?
The rear end is not attached to anything.. the front end has a ground strap you can barely see in the shadow. the 2 straps it hangs from are rubber.. ..insulated? so as im writing this it occurred to me that it looks like maybe its an antenna of some sort? antennas of this length are usually in the low vhf range.. which is used by police, fire, govt, etc... but its hidden under the car.. maybe i have James Bonds other car?

Might be a bit of the cars history that you want to keep. Is your car an old Police car? I am sure that the Daimlers were used as Police vehicles as well as the Mk2s.
i only know that the previous owner got it from the guy that imported it from england in 1980.... no more is known about its history... the heritage trust will record where the car was shipped to for some models,,,, but not sure if that would help... the car still had original jute glued to the floors so car was carpeted at some point... i believe police vehicles had rubber mats? If it was a police vehicle, it sure was a nice one!

The Heritage certificate should tell you where the car was sent from the factory ie the name of the distributor or garage and sometimes the first owner. If it was a corporation such as a Police force it should be recorded as such.

Any chance of a better photo of the front part of this "contraption" with emphasis on the vertical bit and where any wires go etc.
This thing looks like it was not a simple lash up in the back yard device.
It may also have been a transmitter aerial for triggering embedded roadway receiver loops?
if the car was a police or fire or gov't unit, it seems like there would be other clues, like holes in the roof for the lights, or holes in the engine bay for a siren or heavy duty equipment like extra coolers (where would the space for the be?), marred areas or wiring on the dash where a radio was... If not that then maybe it was used as a test vehicle for speed with various driveline arrangements? But again there would certainly be clues to that as well. That is a very intriguing thing. Id leave it there if it was mine.

The link above has a few photos of the underside of a Daimler, but without the special bar.
As the car seems to be partially dismantled, I wondered if the bar might be something improvised to indicate how low the exhaust pipe might hang when fitted or something to lever on when installing the exhaust.
Less seriously: Rather than an accessory for the police or secret intelligence, it might be useful to the criminal fraternity for transporting items. "Honestly officer, I've no idea how that bag of white powder came to be hanging under my car. It must have got caught as I was driving along."
Many Mk2's & S Types had their rear seats removed to carry cones & other paraphernalia.
Which is not a bad idea even for a private Mk2 as the boot is not exactly large and, for a decent continental journey, easily filled with a few tools, spare parts (though I never had need of any of them), and two gallon cans of oil (which I did use). When mine was our only car, I toyed with the idea of replacing the back seat with a large closed box for luggage.
sorry taking so long to get back.. im including the close up that bill asked for... the woodwork is not black and the shift is not "simplified".. it looks to be a professional install of some type as the hangers both front and back are identical... so dont think it was for aiding a muffler install or something like that.. really looks like an antenna with a ground strap connected but isolated what i will assume is the base.... the wood/leather/vinyl? console i removed is stock with a suspicious looking motorola radio in the stock position. i say suspicious because the (AM?) dial starts at 1100 and goes to 2000 which is covers the high end of AM radio (in the US) and beyond.. IF those numbers are assumed to be KHz... the radio does not denote KHz or MHz... the (FM?) dial starts a 200 and ends at 550 which is completely unfamiliar to me as far as bandwidth is concerned..... so looks to me like a specialized antenna for some sort of strange radio that coincidentally fit into the stock console or perhaps was deigned to fit into the stock console by motorola for a british agency?
