Default Jag Mk 2 fuel pump

Hi,
Recently after laying up my car over the winter months I tried starting the car. The fuel pump started clicking and does not stop clicking. I replaced the pump and it still does it. I have drained the fuel tank to check if the inlet strainer in the fuel tank was blocked and cleaned it. Have not filled the tank since draining yet. I was wondering if the fuel pipe located in the tank which feeds the pump might have a crack and letting in air. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Is it pumping any petrol ? After a layoff, it will take longer to fill the fuel line and float bowls. I have never heard of a cracked pipe inside the tank. The pump stops when a certain (low) pressure is detected in the feed pipe. If this isn't working, it'll keep pumping, although there may be a blow-off valve to stop flooding. I am not too up-to-speed on these devices. Try an e-mail to Burlen Fuel Services who make them.

I had a similar problem when after testing the engine, running from a fuel can I connected the pump to the tank for the first time, put in say half gallon . sounded ok for about a minute then went crazy, engine ran ok for a long time. All it turned out to be was it was sucking air. thats the normal way of the pump, once up to pressure itll stop. I put a bit more fuel and all was well. runs for quite along while on just whats in the lines!!
