Cool Jag Resto thread

ok so this tread is going to crawl along nice and slow for about 3 years till the car is done

lots of pictures so enjoy watching 64' S be reborn

so first things first is this is a 1964 Jaguar S with

- 3.8 liter inline 6
- English drive
- 4 gear standard tranny with electric overdrive

the car sat for about 15 years most of the electrical seems intact i seem to have been blessed and the mice stayed away

engine still runs

anyway here's some pics and current progress

ok so the first thing i did was clean it out of course so all the junk out i had to move on to the worst of the rusted areas and begin cleaning up the bodywork to protect the car from any further degradation

so the worst spot was the trunk so :

the first thing to do was remove the chrome and cover up my rear window with a towel to protect it from getting pitted from the grinder

it took about 4 hours to grind off all the thick rust then i sprayed acid on the trunk to inhibit the rust (the reaction turning it all black) so after that i took my orbital sander and removed all the neutralized black rust and re sprayed it with the acid to make sure it was well cleaned then sprayed degreaser over it and rinsed it off with the hose

and once it was all dried up time to prime

not bad for a days work, tomorrow i will fill in all the pits with glazing putty and re prime more pictures to come

Well done, I was just wondering what had happened with this, did you see the pic of the 67 S that was posted this week?

How does she look underneath?

the underneath is in quite good shape for the most part, the floor is sturdy as well as the trunk, but i will have to weld in new sections for the rear axle cage to mount up

aright so today i decided to leave the trunk alone i can smooth out the pits when i take it off to do the underside and moved on the the pasenger side rear quarter panel.

so first things first pull off the bondo i can grab with my hands

and then take out the hammer and chisel

big chunk came off here

lots a rivets and bondo oh joy

then onto the less than scientific method i call "grind the s&#t out of it

crazy amount of dust *twitch*

so once i started grind up into the good metal i had originally planned on just smoothing out the old paint and priming over that but as i progressed i found there was just too much old paint layers and i wanted to know what was hiding underneath

just a few paint jobs

now remember i am leaving the rusted parts on as i am not planning on putting new sheet metal on untill next spring so i am leaving it there so i have a template to work with. all i am doing is cleaning up all the metal and sealing it so nothing will continue to deteriorate while i get all my tools

so i tape up the chrome and cover the windows as all my windows are in perfect shape.

well i found some nice solid sheet metal under all that paint and it looks like the fender is better off than i thought

i wont be doing any more big sections till about Wednesday, when i plan to do around the trunk lid.

sorry jayt2, though this is a very cool project thread and silver has our support and admiration, the sticky feature is applied to more long-term content or sponsored titles, even some short-term promotional events like meetups and fundraisers.

If you don't want to lose track of it, subscribe to the thread and post into it to keep the thread bumped...but not just for the sake of 'bumping' it...thats always frowned upon.

ok so i had said i would be cleaning up around the trunk but today i went out to vacuum out the jag because there was just a pile of dirt in there and the vacuum pulled up some carpet so i thought "hmmm what could be under here??" so i pulled and pulled and next thing i knew....

i had stripped out the carpet so i figured might as well keep going

pulled out the back seat

took out all the padding and began to take the plastic liner off the floor (what a b!&#h)

i found the best way was to just take the chisel and give it a good whack strait down about an inch from the edge of the plastic and it would just shatter off, so after about an hour of my floor getting intimate with the chisel and my hand getting to know the hammer (owww)

a couple holes but not too bad

so now ive turned the car around (found out my E-brake still works after all these years sitting)

next time i go out i will pull up everything from the drivers side and will begin sanding the floor down and cutting out the rotted sections

Don't be depressed,I'm sure there will still be plenty of interest in your project.
All the other S types are just a tribute to the original so that makes yours special.

I really thought that floor would be much worse!

Do we really have to keep Silver bottled up over here guys? It seemed like a lot of us in the S-Type forum really got excited about this thread and his project, kind of gave us a little heritage warm and fuzzy. I know rules are rules and all.....

I've subscribed and will be reading either way - keep on posting Silver.

Martin Robey of Nuneaton, England does repair panels for your car. Not so much available as for its contemporary, the Mark 2. Some parts are the same, mostly at the front, as the rear is completely different.

Not sure if he has a US agent.
