Default Mark2 automatic gearbox

Hi everyone. I'm looking to replace my x300 with a Mk2. I have seen one locally but the (1963) dg250 gearbox has had a disastrous recent overhaul and is to all intents and purposes dead. I am wondering if there is any way to convert it to the later BW35 box. The car has column change at the moment so presumably that would have to convert to floor change? I'm seeking advice on feasibility and approx cost. I would be doing the labour myself.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the BW35 in my S Type and it is column change just the same as the DG250, One difference is I believe is in the way the changer works under the dash as the DG250 immobiliser is under the dash where as the BW35 immobiliser is on the side of the gearbox. The BW35 also does not have the speed hold so this would be deleted from the dash.

Hi Redlock, I pulled out the DG250 in my 1960 MK2 3.8L & fitted an XJ6 S2 BW66, runs sweet.
regards

Was there any work to do on the tunnel? Is it still column change?

No work needs to be done to the tunnel, the BW66 is physically smaller & lighter. Yes, still column shift.
You need to ensure you have: -
1) the XJ6 flywheel,
2) must fabricate a bracket for the kickdown cable that attaches to the rear carby,
3) need correct speedo gear & right-angle bracket to suit for the BW66
3) there's a mod to the gear selector gate plate on the column.
4) need a XJ6 S3 rear transmission mounting bracket
5) I made a mistake of keeping the two split tail shafts (one has to be shortened overall by about 75mm), when it's more practical to have a new one-piece tail shaft made to fit.
Worth the effort, the DG250 is an expensive box to refurbish & parts are becoming rare.

Hi Peter. Thanks for the information. I have completed the purchase of the car now and I'm waiting for delivery. I'll remove the engine and gearbox first job and assess the damage. It's good to have options.
