Default Mk 2 exhaust system puzzle

I've got a stainless steel exhaust system on my Mk 2 that is both odd in construction and obnoxiously loud. I'm trying to figure out who made it and what I can do to tone it down, short of replacing the whole system.

Unlike every exhaust system I can find on the web, my muffler is a single can with two inlets and outlets, instead of the twin can system that is original. Also,
it appears to be welded in a single assembly from where it bolts to the exhaust manifold to the tailpipe.

Any ideas of the origins of this system?

I'm assuming all I can do to quiet it down is have the muffler cut out and replaced with something else. Suggestions are appreciated.

If you are saying it is right after the engine, I would leave it to save money and add a good quality brand stainless muffler after the rear axle.

It's in the same location as the original, but one muffler instead of two. And it's loud enough on full throttle to make normal conversation with the windows down impossible. Reminiscent of a small plane on a steep climb.

I m wondering if it's some sort of sports exhaust that's no longer on the market because of the loudness. To my ear it just doesn't suit the character of the car at all.

I hadn't considering adding on a pair of smaller mufflers downstream.

Upon closer inspection, it's clearly a custom job. The inlet and outlet connections on the muffler are bigger than the exhaust pipes, so the gaps were filled with weld material. Very solidly made, but ultimately flawed.

I'm starting to think the best path is just junking the whole mess and getting a SS system designed for the car. I hate the idea of throwing away good down pipes and connector pipes though.
