MK 2 Parking Brake Compensator Spring
I’m trying to figure out how to fit a new spring to the vertical shaft, which has welded fittings preventing a simple slip on….. any suggestions most welcome! Thanks, Ralph
Hi Ralph. I took a trip to the basement to have a look at mine and sure enough, it's welded at both ends. I guess the only option is to peel it off the shaft one coil at a time. My spring was in good shape so it was media blasted and painted with the spring in place.
The spring is held captive by flanges/washers welded top and bottom to the shaft, so the only way to fit a new one (readily available) is by cutting off the old spring and somehow ‘winding’ the new one on to the shaft….. which must have been the way they were originally made…. I can’t see welding these bits to the shaft with the spring in place….
I'm pretty certain I had mine in bits when I rebuilt my Mark 2 in the 80s, but I may be wrong, as it was a long time ago. I had a nut welded on the side in a position between the two bushes. Yes, Jaguar put in bearing bushes, but made no provision AT ALL for lubrication. After the nut was welded on, I just drilled a hole through.

The S type has a different hand brake set up so I have no experience with this assembly. I have had a look at the parts list and diagram and it is not detailed enough to see if it comes apart but here are the diagrams anyway with the part list and number. C20745.
