Default MK II Front Bumpers

OK- this is a lazy newbie question- I have seen pictures of MKIIs with big fat bumpers, and also with thin bumpers- like on Primaz's car.

Which years had which? I was looking at how beautiful Doug's car is without the bumpers, and was thinking about options with no front bumper or the smallest possible...

The thinner bumpers came in in 1967 with the 340 and 240 Mk2's, by discussions on here the 240 and 340 shipped to the US had the fatter bumpers, they are the smaller bumper as per the S-type which came in in 1963.

This was part of Jaguar's cost cutting on the MK2 when it was nearing the end of it's life and the 420 launched and before the XJ6 came into production in 1969

Ah- so the thin bumpers I am seeing are the S-type bumpers. Are they essentially a direct fit to a MK II? They are very attractive.

the 240 and 340 bumpers are the same bumpers used in the S type and the 420.

a lot nicer-looking bumpers in my opinion. Yes you can adapt them to the MK-2 by replacing the brackets too, but I am not sure if the brackets need to be from a 340,
or if the S type / 420 brackets would work in a MK-2.

The 340 brackets are the same part no's as the S type, so they will fit the the MK2.

But they are no longer available unfortunately,

correction, only the REAR bumper in the 420 is identical to the S type and the 240/340 cars. The front is not.

Jose, Yes I do mean new, and I haven't come across any second hand either yet, the part No's I'm after are BD23963 and BD23962, according to SNG website the front bumpers and brackets are the same on the S Type , Daimler V8, 240 340.

If you can find me some second hand outer brackets that would be great, I can blast and paint them myself.

Are you saying the 420 has the same rear bumper but not the same front one ?

As others mentioned the S-type, 240, 340, 420 are basically the same; if you want an ultra sleek look use the other model bumpers mentioned and just do not install the bumper guards and either use chrome bolts to hide any mounting holes are take the extra time to weld them in & sand them smooth, then take the bumpers to get re-chromed.

correct, remember that the 420 is the same S type from the front windscreen back, only the front is different, so the 420 has a straight front bumper, but the rear bumper is identical to the S type.

Could be that the 420's FRONT BUMPER BRACKETS are identical to the S type too.

How can we indentify a front one, if this is for the 240/340 or the STypes?
there are some for sale through internet, but sometimes even the seller doesnt know exactly what he is selling

One comment--putting a 240/340 slim bumper on a MK2 meant for a wide bumper will require a LOT of work on the rear end panels! Or it will be very ugly!

the FRONT bumper in a 240 / 340 is the same FRONT bumper as in the S type.

the REAR bumper in a 240 / 340 is exclusive to the 240 / 340. No other Jaguar model used it.

I have a pristine condition rear bumper for the 240/340 if anyone is interested and has MONEY! BIG MONEY. Because shipping such a massive part is not cheap and packing it securely will require double boxing. Sorry, no over riders, bumper blade only.

TilleyJon, did the S type front bumper brackets I sent you fit the 340 front bumper ?

Yes Jose, the front outer S Type brackets are the same as the 340, perfect match. Thank you.

perfect, that answers the question: the 340 has the same front bumper and brackets as the S type.

the rear of the 340, that's another story and an interesting one since the MK-2 body looks a lot better with the more refined thin bumpers.
