Mk1 official production numbers

Jose I am sure you do--so do I but XJ-40 was he "code"name for the project. Just like the replacement for the XJ-40 or XJ6 was replaced by the X300. Very soon after launch as XJ6 the difficulty of service and parts folks in determining which XJ6 they were talking about the term XJ 40 began to be used. Some referred to it as the Series 4 but that did not get as much traction. Just as you spoke of UTAH, XJ 40 was just a pre production project name---that stayed!

well George, you just confirmed the confusion.

Confused about badging
Ok I know anyone can put anything on their cars. But I'm talking about factory badging.
I've seen 2 same year 2010 Quatro Porte GTS with different badging from the factory.
One had a 4.7 and the other had a GTS in chrome and red.
Is this just an option upon ordering? or is there something special going on here?

I have to agree with Jose that the model designations can be confusing, project names stuck on some cars and not on others, XJ40 was a project name that stuck.
You only have to look on the forums here to see we have
XJ6 series 1 - 3, in Classic
XJ40(XJ81) in Classic
XJ XJ6 XJR6 (X300) in modern
XJ XJ6 XJ8 XJR (X350 X358) in modern
From WIKI :-
The Jaguar XJ (XJ40) is a luxury sedan manufactured by Jaguar Cars between 1986 and 1994. Officially unveiled on 8 October 1986 it was an all-new redesign of the XJ to replace the Series III, although the two model ranges were sold concurrently until the Series III was discontinued in 1992.
All obviously really clear !
Many forums use the X300, X350 designations, the average person would not have a clue which car is which. If you asked someone on the street what a Jaguar X400 was they would not know, ask them what an X Type is and they would, as Jose says it is confusing for many.
