The PAS ( power assisted steering unit) from the Hale manufactory for my 1965 Jaguar S 3.8ltr. LHD is in need for a complete revise ore replacement by a revised one
At this point the Hale PAS Box is not for sale anymore and only the Adwest PAS BOX for LHD is available at David Manners (partnr. C26019)
The problem is that it is uncertain if the Adwest is interchangeable with the Hale one, David Manners isn't sure about this.
Does any of the forum members changed a Hale PAS for a Adwest PAS or has an address of a proper revising company in England, the Netherlands or Belgium.
I hope someone on this forum has an answer to my questions,
I have been in and around the Jaguar world since 1980, but have never heard of this Hale box. I suspect this is a direct replacement for the Burman PAS box which was fitted in the sixties. The Burman was a recirculating ball box but the Adwest box is totally different, having a servo piston separate from a logarithmically-cut worm and roller to give a variable steering ratio so as to reduce the number of turns lock-to-lock. The Adwest box will not bolt straight on to the subframe of a car that has the previous Burman box as the fitting is different, and there is a cutaway on the subframe so the box will clear. Obviously it would be possible to modify the subframe if you can't find a subframe from a late car that had the Adwest box, but you'd need some dimensions to work to.
That is the so called "Second type" PAS Box as listed in the WS Manual with the torsion bar on the input shaft.
It can be replaced with the Adwest "Varamatic" Box but you need a deep dimple crossmember or to cut & weld a dimple into your existing crossmember to fit it.
