Radio conundrum solved. My interior has been redone so I didn't want to chop holes for speakers. The radio panel had a cassette player which didnt work.
So I installed a more modern device (all black ) and, for stereo, put two 4" speakers in behind the panel with some black speaker cloth.
The headache was making a plywood piece for behind the panel with two speaker cutouts, had to accomodate the heater sliders and couldnt drill through the retrimmed panel front.(had to just use the openings that were there).
It looks quite nice and is stereo.
Blaupunkt do a range of car stereos which get called retro but which I think are better described as discreet. The Skagen and the Stockholm are fairly similar (i think the Stockholm has a cd player), black and with simple non-OTT white illumination. I have put one in my Scimitar for DAB radio / hands free phone and playing music from a usb stick and it looks fine there. The scimitar has a very different look.
I haven't had my Daimler for long enough to worry about things like radios yet but do like DAB etc. I keep a bluetooth speaker (not fitted) in my P6 and connect devices (phone / mp3 player / dab radio etc) to that so might do something similar as an interim measure.
That model of Pioneer radio is exactly the same as I have installed in my X300 and it works very well. The original Jag radio was hopeless as it would not tune and the volume control would cease operating.
A common mounting for stereo speakers in MK1 and MK2 cars is in the outboard kick panels in the drivers and passengers footwells.
