Default Side mirrors for Mk II

Hi all,

Looking for suggestions for door mirrors. None of the local auto shops have anything decent. All their stock seems to be Chinese these days.

I was hoping to find some that attach to the door frame (quarter vent region) rather than drilling holes for the usual bullet or wing mirrors.

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Cheers & beers.

There did indeed used to be small mirrors that clipped onto the door frame by the 1/4 light, as I had one fitted to my Mark 2 in 1987. Whether they are still around is the question. I can't remember the maker name unfortunately.

Have a look here: -

Some of these would be great on my Bentley.

As with redtriangle, I never did get around to drilling holes in my fenders and the thought of doing so made me cringe, thanks Fraser !

I'm betting that they're made in China, but what can you do.
Generally the Chinese stuff has very thin chrome, so I would get a better chroming job before the mirror broke in acne.

Thanks guys, I did search the net but only came up with a limited range of items from the States. Looks like Holden Vintage is the way to go.

Regards.

Moss Motors in Goleta California has the most mirrors for classics, including the ones that attach to the quarter light.

In my '65 S type, I installed 1980's power mirrors and remote switch from the Series 3 XJ-6. For me it is a safety and comfort issue. I would not go back to static motorcycle mirrors as used in old Jaguars.

one time I was told "why don't you buy a XJ-6 if you want the convenience of power mirrors?". I told him, "I already have a XJ-6".

These standard Lucas mirrors (or ok copies..) are available at several sources at low cost. You can drill holes in the window´s inner brass frame corner.
Very unobtrusive visually. Mirrors work fine in this position, even if the quarter frame sometimes partly block the mirror. And the mirror is very sensitive to small adjustments regarding the backwards view..Side mirrors for Mk II-frognerseteren-20.06.2015-6-edit.jpg

Why do some cars have them on the front fenders, and some have them on the door or vent window? Was there any standard?

In Japan I think there is (or once was?) a requirement that the mirrors be way forward on the fenders. Not sure, but I think elsewhere it was simply popular/traditional to do so.

I think it looks hideous having the out on the fenders....but you didn't ask for my opinion, did you?

Cheers

Ah- opinions are good Both my MKIIs have mirrors in the doors below the vent window's. I was wondering about the mirrors in the fenders because I have seen quite a few pictures with the mirrors in the fenders. It makes sense that people would put them there because they make the car look more like the older big saloons. I read another post about the fender mirrors being about as effective as motorcycle handlebar mirrors, so, I probably won't go in that direction for that reason alone.

One of the reasons for mirrors on the fenders is that you can look at them through the windshield and therefore always look forward at the road and traffic in front of you. At some point, the European legislation made it mandatory for the mirrors to be adjustable from the driver seat. As we did not have the US type remotely adjustable mirrors in Europe at the time, the fender positioned mirrors had to go.

fender / wing mirrors are useless for rearwards vision, not to mention they interfere when working at the engine area. In today's roads and traffic, safety is a must, especially at night, being able to adjust door mirrors while driving is something I would not do without, even if the car was an Egyptian or Roman Chariot.

I thought for a second you were going to say "as effective as an ashtray on a motorbike!"

Perhaps as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.

I have spring loaded wing(fender) mirrors and a quarter light mirror on my Daimler. The wing mirrors, when adjusted properly, allow the driver to see what is in the rear danger zones very well and the quarter light is easily adjustable should you need to look to the ground or other odd position.
