Default Steering column

Managed to get the steering column back in with the help of the wife, hopefully the alignment is good.

How far should i push the UV onto the splines? I want as good amount of contact for the splines but the UV also has to be able to do its job.
In order to get the upper and lower steering column back together I had to take out the pinch bolt. Now the UV is nicely on the upper column shaft (and I can slide it up and down) I can't get the pinch bolt back in. It looks like it already fouls on the splines. I don't want to force it but not sure how to approach this.

Good news is after all the hassle of re-building the steering column my horn works again!

Not familiar with the Mk II but, on other Jaguars there is a groove in the splines for the pinch bolt to slide through/across. This limits how far the splines engage the UJ. I hope this helps, if not for get I said anything.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I was trying to get the indicator striker setup and I noticed that the inner shaft is 90 degrees out (I didn't remove the steering wheel). The more I do on this car the more I realise that the last renovation was not done with a great deal of care. So I will have to start again, turn the shaft 90 degrees, remove the steering wheel and get everything setup correctly.

Still leaves me wondering how far to push the UV onto the steering column.

Rishi the splines can only go so far and that is to where the pinch bolt lines up with the groove. If you have pushed the splines in to far then the bolt will not line up just if you had not pushed it in far enough. You will have to ease (not pull) the splines back a fraction until the bolt slides home. I say ease because if you pull the whole thing comes apart and you have to start again. Another good use of the Churchill tool "Wife" though. lol.

Thanks, then I should be able to get it wrong! Pleased I didn't force things. Sometimes the tool "wife" is the handiest tool in the box. I can do a lot alone but being inside the car and under the bonnet at the same time is not something I have been able to work out!
