Sticking brakes on my Mk2
I wonder if anyone can help me. I have an annoying although sporadic problem with my brakes - this happens usually at least once every journey. So, you’ll be travelling at around 40/50mph and all of a sudden you realise that the accelerator isn’t increasing the car’s speed: for some reason the brakes are at least partially engaged (the pads occasionally produce a smell – presumably because they’re burning). A tap on the pedal disengages the brakes. The reason I ask on the forum is that, on the recommendation of my mechanic (who is very good and who I trust) the servos have been replaced three times and now the master brake cylinder. With all of the obvious culprits having been replaced I wonder if anyone else has experienced anything similar or might recommend a course of action here – very grateful to hear anyone’s thoughts on this
Well, yes. I have a 67 mk2 3.8. I had a bad servo, got no vacuum assist and the pads would rub and stick particularly when starting out in first. Had to tap the pedal several times to release the pads. Front, back, both I am not sure. It took 3 servos to get one that worked and thereafter all is well. I did not have the problem at speed as you have but maybe in my case this was avoided by initial tapping of the pedal.
I should also mention that I had the 67 mk2 3.8 brake system completely rebuilt. I had Wilwoods put on the front and the rear cylinders rebuilt. First time out the rears were rubbing and overheated with smoke billowing out from the rear. Very classy entre to a car show last year. A month later I went to start up and noticed brake fluid on the floor at the right rear wheel. The rear cylinder failed. Was told the replacement parts were from the place where gun powder was invented. This was all before and in addition to the servo solution.
There is a modern caliper that can replace the original calipers from a UK based company both front and rear.
