You might want to call a rebuilder for quotes. This was lifted from a thread in another forum, circa May 2013:

"Apple Hydraulics:
Re-sleeving only: send us empty housings, pistons and bleeders removed (leave centering rod in place, we work around it). We return cleaned and resleeved, but still empty. You reassemble with a kit you provide. $60 each brass sleeve, $80 each stainless steel sleeve.

Complete rebuilding: send them as they came off the caliper, we return ready to bolt back on the caliper, straight out of the box. (we will dissasemble, clean, resleeve and reassemble with new rebuild kit). $95 each (brass), $115 each (stainless)

Turnaround time is one week here, in the shop. Shipping is flat rate priority mail, insured, $14.70 for anything that fits in 8.5x11x5.5 box.

White Post:
The cost to sleeve & completely rebuild your calipers is $80.00 each + ups ground back to you is $20.00. Pads and bridge pipes are extra if you need them. Lifetime warranty and about 24 hours in our shop."

I would imagine costs have increased in the interim, but the above are far less then you were quoted locally. White Post is a complete rebuild and a lifetime warranty; I began dealing with them in the mid 1980s, so their lifetime warranty actually means something...

Good luck in getting your brakes sorted...

I used Apple Hydraulics for my Jaguar, the prices from the post above were more in line and they did a nice job.

Thanks for the suggestions and the pricing information so I will keep checking out options, meanwhile I'm installing new bushings in the front suspension so I have a bit of time to sort out the callipers.

Apple Hydraulics: ~ that's more like it. Now you are getting down closer to SA pricing for stainless sleeving.

I see Welsh have Stainless pistons for almost the same price I paid for cast. But if mine last half as long as the originals I won't have to worry about it.

Resurrecting this old thread as I'm currently at the same place as the Chris was. I have removed the crud and sanded back with 600 wet'n'dry in a rotational direction and some have come out quite well, others not so good. There are some areas where the surface is blemished, but not too badly pitted. I'm sure I've used far worse back in the 'old days'. I really don't want to be spending £800 for a set of new ones, so what do you guys think of the 'bad example'. I'm sure I could hone further to get to some good metal without oversizing greatly. I won't ever be pushing the car hard (I have other vehicles for that) and I'm thinking perhaps the best could be used up front, those not-so-good at the rear. I'll be using a dual circuit system so they won't be on the same pipework. This is one of the best and one of the worst that I've posted here, the photo looks far worse than it is really, but can you please let me know your thoughts, thanks -

I don't think one should take risks with brakes. If it were me, I'd put on new modern calipers on the front and replace the rear piston assemblies at the rear. Yes, it's a large sum of money, but how much is your life worth, or maybe more important, the car ? (only joking !!)

I used White Post on mine. They looked like brand new and the service took under a week. Also I did fronts and rears separately to make it hurt less. Yes $800 is a bit of a pill, but you get them back done right and ready to go, no worries. I considered honing mine, but beyond my own life, I didnt want to risk having them fail and wreck the car either.

White Post really does excellent work; however, Voucher Boy is in Cardiff. so shipping costs, etc., may prove an issue. He might want to pop by the so-called "British Jaguar forum" and ask those folks who they would recommend:

Thank you guys for the advice. I'll certainly get some quotes (I'll report back with prices) and make a decision from there. I'm fortunate enough to have the luxury of time as the car won't be requiring the brakes for a long while yet. I thought I'd seen all of the Jag forums, but that's one I missed, so thanks 's-type'.

These guys did the master cylinder on my 3.8 MK2 and I haven't had any issues with it so far.

The pictures of your existing cylinders look ok for the best one but the worst one looks a little bit ropey and probably needs sleeving.
