Does not look like a Burman type 1 or 2 or the Adwest Marles that was fitted to the later cars and the 420. The distinctive area to look at is the top sections. Burman is round with six nuts surrounding the hydraulic pipe and cap. The Adwest has an almost square top made from Alloy and has four bolts heads
Below are pictures first of the Burman. Type one and two look the same. Second photo is of the Adwest marles Variomatic for you to compare it to.
turns out the PS gearbox i obtained is a right hand drive unit from a Mark 9 Jaguar...will not fit my 1964, 3.8 left hand drive model.
wonder what its worth?
and thanks for the photos.
Yes ~ cass is correct. It's not a Burman Type1 or 2 or a Marles Bendix Varamatic (Adwest) PAS Box. Has very different mounting points etc. No good for a mK2 or S Type.
Don't know what it is worth but it is worth something to someone!
If you are looking at putting PAS on your 64 3.8 you would do well to look for the PAS from either a late Mk2, in the UK they were known as the 240 and 340 with the thin bumpers or from a Jaguar 420/ Daimler Sovereign. These were all built between 1966 and 1969 and were fitted with the better Adwest Marles Variomatic steering box. You will require the full front subframe as the Adwest requires a dimple cut out of the subframe cross member to allow it to sit correctly or you can have a competent mechanic cut and weld a dimple for you in you original cross member.
This is a photo of the front subframe from my RHD 1968 S Type showing the dimple for the Adwest PAS circled in yellow.
I really appreciate that. this is a big help. Being 58 years old, 360 pounds and with a very damaged left hip, it is going to be my last hurrah to get this old girl running before i cant move out of my bed any more..
Thinking of picking up a motor and tranny from a 72 XJ6 north of salem oregon for $500 bucks. I don't know if it is a good deal, but he wants 800 for the entire vehicle with title.
should i pull the motor and trans for 500 or take the whole thing for 800?
idea is to put a modern drivetrain in the 64 MK2...and i dont even know if this $200 dollar vehicle is restorable yet...
Anyway i used to have a 59 MK1 when i was 19 years old. paid 900 bucks for it in Torrance CA. trailer ed it home, and couldn't get it to run from a bad rod bearing....man i did so much work to that bad girl....5 coats of acrylic enamel, dark burgandy...total cost of aircraft quality paint was $65.00 , hand rubbed between coats, no runs no drips, i dont know if i was smoking ganja at the time, but it probably increased my creative aptitude.
anyway, i had a 3.4 block rebuilt for 1200 in Northridge California, had the head redone, new front fenders spot welded on took 6 months for those to get to so cal. via boat, train, moms truck...etc. from england. one was a warehouse original and the other was hand made, i remember being impressed by the single internal weld at the front curve.
so the car was on its side in my parents driveway, sandblasted the underside, gray primer, black gloss engine paint, girling shocks, clean everything, painted rebuilt entire drivetrain...re did the wood with straight grain Walnut veneer, BUT being a young guy, used the advice of a carpenter who specialized in formica over pressboard, used therefore a water based contact cement... BAD IDEA, WHEN THE CAR GOT HOT, THE GRAIN SPLIT and there were cracks everywhere in the watco danish oil finished bare wood.
I remember driving it at 530 in the morning one time only, no tags, no plates...milk crate for a seat, doors flew open cause the locks werent installed yet. about the happiest 4 miles of city driving i ever experienced...sounded like a cat..purrrrrrrr.
well, things were bad in 1979-1982, recession, quit my stationary engineer apprenticeship 2 years in..hazing abuse etc... and found a car collector at a local glass shop where my grannys AMC stationwagon was having 5the windshield replaced due to breakage by a very drunk friend with a vodka bottle at a ranch party...the Jag collector i met there was the solution to my debt problem (unsecured debt, what a moron i was) who offered $1,900.00...like a moron i sold it to him. I put shop lights in his 9 car garage in South Pasadena...remembering the wine and cheese partys he had with wealthy pasadena residents and psychologists every thursday evening.
so i noticed my hard work sitting in his backyard like a lesser species, not worthy of garage keeping, a real insult to all the hard work. all that was really required at that point was carpet, headliner and seats.
He later sold it for $6000.00 to someone in France. or so that was the story.
i had a credit card bill due to lack of employment and thought i really had to make my debt go away, the collectors were threatening me with this and that.. had i known unsecured debt was not a real problem in the courts... i would be owning a $79,000 car today.
As i sit here drinking beer and smoking weed to deal with the pain from trying to remove the front left door glass and mk 2 chrome...to get to the door handle and make my own key from scratch....with 4 lazy teenagers who prefer playstation over their fathers mad skills..., it's go time.
I feel your pain brother! Too many cars and not enough time. This one had a better outcome than most of the ones. It ended up in a small family museum in an LA suburb. (Saw it in the background of an "Overhaulin'" episode reveal). Keep on working . . . many of the young ones just don't get it and it's sadly to their misfortune.
