Default S Type PAS (again)

Hello all. I need your collective knowledge. Should a Burman Power Steering box from a Mk 10 be compatible with a 1964 SType
At this stage thats all the info i have but there are a couple of images

Here's the Mark 10 unit on SNG Barratt's website. This looks like the Burman recirculating-ball power-assisted box you have illustrated. The later 4,2 litre cars had the Marles Varamatic box made by Adwest.

S Types had 3 different PAS boxes during their production run. (all covered in detail in the WS manual.)

So called: Type 1 Burman recirc ball
Type 2 Burman recirc ball with torsion bar on input shaft to improve feel.
Marles Varamatic steering box with parametric steering. Variable ratio.

I have no idea of their interchangeability with the Mk X.

I suppose the only thing is to see how the part numbers compare. I doubt the Mark 10 had a different Burman box to those fitted to the Mark 2 and S-types. However if it were me, I'd want to fit the Marles box. However the front subframe has to be modified to allow the box to bolt up to the mounting points.

I agree Fraser, I would prefer a marles varamatic but the marles boxes are few and far between as far as i can see and i am not comfortable modifying the front cross member despite the fact that others have done it.
Cheers
tim

The one for sale looks an awful lot like the type 2 Burman (2nd image supplied by Glen)

That's the one that I have in my 340.
Make sure the O-Ring "42" and its associated bushing it seals against is in good shape.
If it leaks internally there, tremendous pressure builds up inside the unit where it's not supposed too and it gets very hot to the point where it starts to smoke, that's what happened to mine.

The high oil pressure is fed through line "50" and is meant to keep the main drop shaft in place up against the worm spiral housing, #23.

Yes indeed it does. That is the unit in my car.

If you do buy a used unit do it on the basis that it can be returned for refund. There are certain components that wear beyond being able to rebuild. Many spares are simply not available.
