Windscreen Wiper Problem

I have to say I suspect the wheel boxes are worn out. The wipers are pushed onto the spindle for these, and over time can wear out. One trick is to remove the rack, then rotate each spindle 180 degrees so the rack engages in an unworn segment. Try it, it might just work, if not then you need new wheel boxes, and this might be difficult, as they are NLA..

you can open or save the following Lucas Wipers pdf file so you can identify the type of motor and wheel boxes you have.
also you can disconnect the motor, unbolt it from its mountings, and pull the entire motor with cable, then grease the cable and reinsert it.
before you do that, remove the wiper arms from the car.

The workshop manual says remove the dash to gain access to the wiper wheel boxes.
I managed to do it without literally pulling half the car apart by just removing the top rail, but it was pretty fiddly. And what's worse, I found the wheel box fixing nuts to be an odd size (close to 5/16" but not quite) which made it a pain.
All the best.

just remove the motor and cable, rotate the wheel box gears by turning the splined wiper arm shafts, and try again. This wiper cable system is identical all the way to 1992. You could use XJ-6 gears or "wheel boxes" if it comes to that.
another possibility is that the two nuts that tighten the gear cover could be loose. Tightening the nuts usually cures any slipping. Use a 5/16" open end wrench. Wrap a string on the unused side of the wrench and around your finger in case it falls off your hand, then you can pull it out.
also FYI, this same cable system is used in XJ-6 sunroof motors, same principle, and when the cables start to slip it is usually the gear cover being loose.
