Smile 16 year old with a jag!

So hello guys. A couple of months ago I got a 2000 jaguar xjr in anthracite. It has black interior with the bucket seats. Unfortunately, I bought it over impulse, and got it without doing any research. On top of that, i was taken advantage of by the place I got a loan for it.( it went from $6,000 to $12,000 because my parents unknowingly signed without reading the fine print!!) not to consider it had 156,000 miles in the clock which at the time I didn't know if that was a lot for this car. Anyways I just wanted to introduce myself. I love Jaguars and mine is no exception! It is in fantastic condition

That's an excellent looking car.

My advise, learn how to do all the work yourself. You will save thousands.

With the internet you can find directions on how to fix just about anything.

First thing you should look at is the condition of your secondary timing chain tensioners.
Also Synthetic oil is your best friend.

Grats on the chick magnet!

Could it be that the original amount financed was $6000 but the total amount with taxes, and title fees paid over the life of the loan is $12,000? If so, that, unfortunately is the way it works when you finance an older, used car. I would say that your interest rate is probably 15%+ or so, right?

BTW, nice car, she still has some miles left in her if you take good care of her. If you "dog" her too much, don't take care of the tensioners, or skimp on the maintenance, you (your parents actually) will still have to pay the 12K, even if the car doesn't gives out on you.

I had a Lotus when I was 18. (Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious)

Cost me lots of dough.

Welcome XJRman, and greetings from the Midwest Region! I'd say, don't panic. If you don't think you can afford the car, you could sell it, probably taking a loss. But, working that off could end up being far less than the eventual repairs will be when, not if, things go wrong. OR, you could save up, learn how to do things yourself, and keep this car for years and years. Common wisdom is the longer you keep a car the less money you spend (on eternal car payments, etc.) Likewise, you could work like the dickens and get the car paid off early. That way it won't cost you 12K!

In any event, drive smart and drive safe. It's a great car!

Cheers,
Scott

Well one way or another you got it, and what a car! That's gorgeous. Take good care of it and heed tarhealcracker's advice!

Pitifulpluto: thanks for the advice.
Totalimmortal363: not a problem!
Vector: I didn't know that that's how loans worked for older cars. I will absolutely take care of this sweet ride!!! I'm not your average teenager. I actually appreciate the things I have
Tarhealcracker:I treat the car as a luxury vehicle, not a sports car. I don't stunt on this little Hondas, I mean there is no competition so I don't even bother driving fast hahaha!
Norri: thank you for the reference and I will look at that research tonight ! Definitely looks noteworthy from just looking over it .
Sklimii: greetings from the Chicago area!
Midwestjag: trust me I am not getting rid of this car!!!! This is perhaps the most comfortable car I have ever been in or probably ever will be in. One thing that this car has is class. That is why I love it so much. If I wanted something sporty I would've gotten an xkr but I'm just into this car a lot! Being a willing teen, I'm going to try to do the work myself thanks to these posts that have easy guidance
Muddydog: thanks for the compliment. You also have a nice xk! I will take tarhealcracker's advice

One other thing XJRman. Find, memorize and live by the "compound interest formula". It is one of the most important things to understand for young people and will guarantee your future financial success. I'm just passing on a hard to come by life's lesson. If you do this, you will be driving fine cars all your life. I'm just saying. Oh yes. One other rule. Avoid divorce attorneys..

Welcome to the forum XJRman,

A late welcome from me as I've been away doing some serious Jaguar driving across Europe.

You've had some wise advice, particularly about the V8 tensioner weakness. Good luck and enjoy the X308. It looks a beauty.

Graham

thank you, Graham. BTW, anybody ever use Leatherique on their seats? I'm considering the purchase but I want to make sure it's worth the price since 50 dollars for a bottle is a little expensive

Many good reports about Leatherique on the forum. I can't recall reading a negative comment about it.

If you need to do more than clean and condition, check this thread for leather dye and repairs:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/i...results-90629/

You'll be lucky if there's no wear on your driver's seat bolster.

Graham

Two great pieces of advice, there! Get a good business calculator to help with the finances - works for savings, too. Get an OBD II reader before burning 50 bucks leather treatment.

When the time comes, remember the advice on divorce attorneys - it starts with being super critical during the selection process - fine women are like fine cars, pick carefully and maintain well.

Cheers
