Default 1985 XJS fuel gauge and Trip Meter issues

Hi fellow Jag enthusiests. I have a 1985 XJS and it had been sitting for a while ( 9 years ), I have 2 issues, first is fuel gauge is stuck at 1/4 tank. My second issue is the trip meter is not showing any dispay. Is there a fuse for the display.

Thanks, camcor

Most likely the sending unit is on the fritz. Common issue; easy to replace.

Also, the instruments themselves are known to go wonky due to dirty/loose/corroded contacts on the printed circuit at the back of the instrument cluster. The cluster is fairly easily removed to clean the contacts

My second issue is the trip meter is not showing any dispay. Is there a fuse for the display.

Thanks, camcor

Probably fuse #4 in the main (LH) under dash fuse panel...but the same fuse covers all the panel gauges as well....so if your speedo, tach, etc are working then the fuse is OK

The unit might be flat-out dead BUT sometimes just removing and re-seating the connector plug brings a seemingly dead t/c back to life.

(I should mention that simply cleaning connectors, contacts, and grounds fixes a great many electrical problems on these cars)

Best to post technical questions in the specific XJS section.

Cheers and welcome aboard

DD

Forgot to mention.....

Remove the light green/ornage wire from the fuel tank sending unit. Turn the ignition 'on'. Now touch the wire to a ground. The fuel gauge should move to 'Full". If it does, the gauge itself and wiring are OK and the problem must be the sending unit.

If it doesn't move to 'Full" then the gauge itself is faulty or there's a problem other than the sending unit

Cheers
