Welcome to the forum harrisge,
Follow Steve's link to the XK8/XKR section for help, advice and information.
Before considering any serious metalwork, you have tried locking and arming the vehicle with the fob and then disarming, opening and starting with the Black headed key? This would normally disengage your Valet mode and allow you to open the luggage compartment with the interior dash button.
Enjoy the forum.

I have seen valet switches that sometimes stick. See if you can pull the button out a bit with a small blade.
You can also remove the panel under the dash (just 2 screws at the bottom and pull straight out toward you) and unplug the buttion to see if the switch is shorted.
