Default 2010 XFS V6 Headlamp left lamp Xeon Failure - Please Help

Hi all,

Looking for a bit of info and wonder if someone can give me a bit of advise.

I have a 58 plate XF but is was a special ex Jag MD car . so the chassis is a 2010 model.

The left hand headlamp, has failed. it started at first coming on a few secs. then going off again. if you powered down the car and re pressed the start switch after a few attempts it would come back on. and as long as the car was running there would be no issues.

Now the headlamp has failed all together, I have taken the lamp and ballast of the left and fitted it all on the right and vice versa, bit by bit, lamp first etc.

The lamp and ballast works OK on the right but the right hand lamp and ballast will not work on the left.

This basically eliminates any problems with the lamp or ballast.

I can't find any fuses or relays that control these lamps, thinking it may be a dodgy relay etc.

can any one give me a little advise as where best to look, it would be warmly appreciated. I have seen a similar thread on another forum, but alas did not give an answer, I can only surmise therefore, that this has happened before and I am not the first.

Thanks
Darrel Walters

Welcome to the forum Darrel,

Follow Norri's link to the XF tech section for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top there is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Hope it's an easy fix.

Enjoy the forum.

Graham

Hi Darrel,

I don't own a XF but your comment about no fuses got me curious. Over in the XF tech section there is this document XF Lighting in Detail.pdf That discusses XF lighting. From the doc:

"Circuit Protection The CJB and the RJB provide circuit protection for their respective lighting circuits. The exterior lighting circuits are protected by Field Effect Transistors (FET's). The FET's can detect overloads and short circuits and respond to heat generated by increased current flow caused by a short circuit. On a normal conventionally protected circuit this would cause a fuse to blow. The FET's respond to the heat increase and disconnect the power supply to the affected circuit. When the fault is rectified or the FET has cooled, the FET will reset and operate the circuit normally. If the fault persists the FET will cycle, disconnecting and reconnecting the power supply. The CJB and the RJB store fault codes which can be retrieved using a Jaguar approved diagnostic system. The fault code will identify that there is a fault on a particular output circuit which will assist with fault diagnosis and detection."

Since one side is working, I'm guessing there is some sort of fault with the FET on the bad side .....or........perhaps a loose connection or broken wire. I'd certainly look for easy things like loose connectors before diving into CJB (central junction Box) diagnostics.

As indicated in the doc if you have an OBD diagnostics tool that can read the extended jag specific codes, it may help pinpoint the problem.
