Default 84 xj6

Hi,

I'm new and just bought an 84 xj6. picked the car up today and drove it home about 2hrs. no big problems on the trip but there were a few issues I'll be asking for help on in the tech forum soon.

car is green with tan leather and only 21000 miles.

thanks for letting me join. I look forward to learning about these great cars!

Welcome, that's really a low milage
Enjoy it but low miles doesn't indicate that a car will be trouble free , namely as they get older mechanical parts failure from sitting .
IE : Rotors are get sticky from lack of usage

Too true, too true !

Much depends on how the 21k miles was accumulated. At the extreme, if the car was used for a couple years but then been in dead storage for the remaining 24, then there could very easily be a number of systems needing rejuvenation and repair.

OTOH, if the car was driven, let's say, 3 or 4 times a year and 21k miles was gradually-but-regularly accumulated, things might not be too bad. Still, though, caution is required. Years take a toll even if the miles don't. Rust in the fuel and braking systems would be my first areas of concern.

Cheers
DD

I doubt I would have bought the car if it had been stored for 20 years. just too many potential problems... the story is the car was owned by a couple who used it only when they went out to dinner etc on the weekends. they both passed away a few years ago and their niece and nephew decided to sell the car. I have no way of verifying the story but have found no evidence YET that suggests otherwise... time will tell .... :-)

I presume that it is in gorgeous condition as far as cosmetics go? If so, you're miles ahead of the game.

Mechanical issues on these cars are generally easy and relatively inexpenisve to solve...as opposed to new paint, leather, wood, chrome, etc which will cost a small fortune to make right.

Do you have some pics?

Cheers

No pics yet but I'll try to get some and post. the car is in very good condition cosmetically. the paint is 26yrs old and so definitely not perfect but still pretty good. the interioir is in excellent shape. the leather is almost like new with only a few minor small stains and no rips tears or fraying at all. the wood looks like it just came out of the showroom not one single scratch no dulling of the finish. so once the mechanicle issues are sorted it should be a very nice example.

thanks for the warm welcome and all the help,

rgg
