Smile 86 and 87 Jaguars

Hello i'm new to this forum. My father has 2 jaguars an 86 and an 87. one is in my garage and the other in his. My father has had these cars for a while and never moves them. I asked him whats wrong and he told me a transmission shifter cable. says its stuck on drive the whole time so hold the brake down if I ever want to move it. To my surprise the other Jaguar according to him is not running due to not having a radiator hose. I tell myself why in the hell didn't I ever asked him what was wrong before. If I knew this they would be up and running. Well anyway it is too cold up here in Wisconsin to try to do anything but once summer hits I will try to get both of these cars moving. I think both cars are inline sixes or one a six and the other a eight. I guess my first question would be is the shifter cable is an easy fix. Don't know much about the Jaguars but I do want to fix the 86 since it was made the year I was born.

Welcome to the forum Jaguar1987,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

For those years they could be XJ6 Series III or XJ40. It doesn't sound like there's too much to do to get them running again:

XJ40

Follow this link XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XJ6 Series III forum or this one https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj40-25/ to the XJ40 forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top of each tech section is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Or maybe even an XJS!

The XJ40 style was introduced as '1988' model year in the USA, with the Ser III XJ6 being built right up thru April 1987 for the USA market, as '1987' model year.

Still, though, there's always a chance of confusion on the subject, so picture clarification is good.

Cheers
DD
