Ya...20% is usually pretty common in automatics. If you want to bring the jag to the next dyno day that I go to, you're more than welcome. Always fun to see what you're putting to the ground.

Effective horsepower (ehp) / True horsepower (thp) / Wheel Horsepower (whp) Effective horsepower, True hp or wheel horsepower is the power converted to useful work. In the case of a road vehicle this is the power actually turned into forward motion as measured on a chassis dynamometer. "True hp" is generally 10% to 20% less than the engine's "bhp" ratings due to drivetrain losses. Wheel Horsepower (whp) is the more widely used term for Effective horsepower.

I think most manuals are closer to 10% loss because it is a purely 'mechanical' means of transferring power. Clutch plates and springs. AT's are fluid mechanisms. Engine RPM's drive pumps that force fluid through a system of tracks....the fluid movement spins torque converters that move the drive shaft. Much more potential for loss there...also, heat becomes a factor. If you dyno an AT that's been driving in town for an hour...you will get a worse reading than the guy who just drove 2 blocks to the dyno shop. Heat is an auto trans' worst nightmare.

Now...keep in mind that saving 10% in effective power transfer doesn't necessarily make a manual the 'faster' car, as is the common consensus out there. There's a lot to be said for technology today. With 6 spd AT's out there...gear sizes are almost equal. The AT's can shift in less than .10 seconds whereas only world class drag racers with sequential gearboxes can match that. In Forced Induction cars (such as my turbo or the Supercharged Jags), the AT's don't lose boost between shift points. All manuals will lose boost when shifting gears. I have seen side by side comparison 1/4 mile races between manuals and ATs of the same make and model where the AT comes out just slightly ahead. True with the Volvo S60R, as well as Pontiac's GTO. Then again...it almost always comes down to the better driver.

I don't get socal what you did with your muffler. You dont like them, so you took it out. So how does your car run? I'm assuming you put something in but Idk.

Well...as far as what I did with it...it's sitting in the trunk of my wife's '73 Ghia, which I'm slowly restoring.

As I did on the previous 2 cars before this one, I had the muffler removed and stock diamter piping welded in its place. On my previous cars, this sounded great. On the Volvo, it was a little too harsh...I think I have a clip of the idle before I added another resonator...one sec...

idle from under the car...sounds worse than it really was becuase the camera was right under the pipe:
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v6...rrent=Idle.flv

Here's a couple from in the car...one with the windows up (and my son in the background) and one with windows down:
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v6...=WindowsUp.flv
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v6...indowsDown.flv

It was pretty loud though when wide open..but I always give it a week or so to feel it out before going back to the shop. I then had a section of pipe cut out and an aftermarket resonator welded in. So...stock cat, stock resonator, and 2nd resonator. Resonators don't baffle air flow...unlike a muffler...so the pipe is basically straight through (not counting the bends) from the cat all the way out. Maybe no increase in HP, but I think it helps the throttle response a little. And total cost, with custom tips, was less than $100 for what I think sounds better than most aftermarket exhaust systems. Sorry I don't have a recent clip of how it sounds now...I should make one.

Sounds good...I didn't know you could have a car without a muffler.

Ya...check your local laws..but most places don't have a law that specifically requires a muffler...at least in the US. There are just laws regarding catalyticl converters and decibal limits. In fact...the Dodge Neon SRT-4 comes from the factory with no mufflers. That's why they sound the way they do.

As far as the money goes....this is by far the least expensive modification you can make to your exhaust. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. At least you'll know before you go and drop $500 on a couple Magnaflow mufflers or the like.

Having the catalytic converter on keeps the fumes down and does quiet the engine a little...I'm sure that with or without mufflers on socals car it was still louder than most cars because of that turbo...sure without mufflers it will be a little louder but not obtrusively loud...right socal?

BTW I thought the s60 r's were manual only? Guess not...how come in the one video the rpm was near 6k and the later one was near 4k? Sport mode button or just because you didn't accelerate as hard?

Ya...I just didn't get into it as much on the 2nd vid cuz there was traffic ahead of me.

And I don't have any mufflers on it right now....just the stock cat and 2 resonators. Without the 2nd resonator, it was pretty loud. It's all about finding a happy medium...not everyone likes an aggressive exhaust note...I love it. Would love to take an S-Type R, strip everything back behind the cats and weld in dual 3" pipe with glasspacks! Nobody would see that comin'! LOL

Same difference you've never heard of a rednecks pickup truck? Rednecks can't afford diesels!

That's drilling holes in the muffler though!

Along the same lines of what I'm talking about...here's a clip of the same 4.2L AJ-V8 in the Lincoln LS with no resonators and Magnaflow mufflers added. Picking and choosing what to cut out and what to leave in is always interesting....

Wait lincoln uses the AJ-V8, I thought that engine was built by and for Jaguars. Don't tell me that's the same engine every ford owned V8 car uses?
