Finally here
As long as I can remember, I have been a Jaguar fan. Way back in the time period of great movies and music (i.e. 1980s), a "rich" friend of mine's mom had a Jaguar. If my childhood memory serves me correctly, it was an XJS. Note, we all thought he was rich because he was the only kid that had the weird little Nintendo robot thing that spun the little top thing (Google R.O.B, if you are unfamiliar or forgot!). I digress. I remember liking it so much because, at the time, where we lived in the US, a Jaguar was quite uncommon and that is what intrigued me so much about it - it's uniqueness. Much like me, it "didn't run with the pack" or blend in with every other boring white, black, or silver pinto and sedan out there. Almost counter-culture in a way and I always have been, and still am, not one to "run with the pack" or fall in line, as it were.
Anyway, I felt Jaguars were always out of reach. To a no-nothing kid back then, I thought they were easily a million dollars each! Might as well have been to me. Really though, I knew of no Jaguar dealer around, this was the only one I ever saw, and my friends dad owned a huge car dealerships, so I assumed that he got it through being a dealer.
Life went on, for a long time and quite honestly Jaguars have still been fairly rare around my semi-rural-to-rural stomping grounds so I sort of forgot about them, I hate to say. I have always wanted cars that were different than everyone else. I didn't want to stick out, but conformity makes me sick, if that makes sense. Whether it was my 1973 Slant 6 Dodge Dart (Olive Green mind you, the fastest color) as a 17 year old in the mid-90s to my now (for the past 10 years) 2011 Mini Copper, I have always liked things that were different. At least different enough.
My current and long time DD, my 2011 Mini Cooper (manual non-S) has probably been my favorite vehicle I have ever owned. Car sized go-kart that is super fun to drive and at nearly 40 mpg, it has been a money save also (though I guess the premium fuel requirement has knocked that down a bit). MINI's are love them/hate them and most people who hate on them for being unreliable are honestly probably uninformed or just unlucky. Mine hasn't been perfect (in fact, getting ready to swap out my Getrag 6 speed for another gearbox soon), but it has been as reliable, if not more so, than any other vehicle I have owned.
I guess it helps that I have been working on cars nearly my whole life and am 99% DIY (some things I don't have time for or desire to) with all of my vehicles. That being said, I am actually an IT Analyst and Director for a large manufacturing company. The division I work for makes some very well known automotive products but want to maintain some anonymity so I'll just leave it at that.
Anyway, as you can tell, succinctness is a strength of mine (as is sarcasm, clearly). OK, so how did I get here (finally)? I was browsing through IAA near me and landed on a car. A Jaguar. And suddenly, I remembered! I have wanted a Jaguar and now I have the money and skill set to possibly get a good deal. While I am partial to XJ's, this was too good a deal to pass up and I figured it may be a good way to get experience with them. I was able to get a 2003 X-Type 3.0 with only 120k miles on it. Great condition overall. Only issue was a no-start condition. Didn't see any real big red flags, so went for it and landed a heck of a deal at $375! Now that I have it home, the main issue is fuel pump..I believe something electrical, but more on that in an appropriate post when I have an actual question! I am able to start it by directly connecting the pump to the battery. Starts right up.
Anyway, I do feel like I will probably own at least one Jaguar at a time for the rest of the time on this Earth that God allows me to have so I'll probably become a regular for sure! Good to be here.
