Default First things first, hello!

Hey! New here from northern New Jersey, 20 miles from NYC. My dad and I just picked up a 1992 XJ6 with the 4.0 I6 and what feels like a 4 or 5 speed automatic transmission. I'm used to working on my car (albeit a 1988 Volkswagen Cabriolet) so I think I'll do alright with any gremlins that present themselves, but I'm definitely no fool about asking for help. That's why I'm here. The VW forums have been invaluable in my endeavours to maintain my Cab, and I def look forward to using this new resource. I know enough already to seek out the Haynes for this car (I have a Bentley for my VW), but I also know enough to know that he manuals don't cover *everything*.

I'm excited to have a new car to learn about! Let's go!

Hello,
Congratulations on your new Jaguar!
Now that you've learned to speak German you'll have to learn the "King's" English to work on a Jaguar. LOL Just Kidding.

If you haven't already found your way there someone will be along shortly to direct you to the correct section where members will help you with just about everything Jaguar related.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Welcome to the Forums.

Well done.

The XJ40 is a 4 speed, with lock up converter.

Good luck.

Welcome to the forums Ijgabloo,

Good to have you with us.

I can see you've already worked out which XJ6 you have and found your way to the XJ40 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the US Northeast Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-northeast-35/ to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Thanks for the welcome! I'm trying to find out if I have a base, a sovereign, or a Vanden Plas; there's very little badging, and I've had little luck finding a vin decoder. How do I determine which one I've got?

The VIN will confirm it BUT the US used to assign a new VIN to imported vehicles which sometimes prevents a straightforward decode. Have a look at the XJ40 tables in my thread:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/g...tables-145996/

See section 6.3 for the XJ40 and further information on US codes in later posts by Doug Dwyer.

If the tables don't resolve it, post exterior and interior photos in the XJ40 forum. Most of us who have owned XJ40's can differentiate the specifications.

Graham
