just recent had "gearbox fault "up on screen....when you turn on jag first all is ok ..reverse is perfect but put her into drive and normally a few yards then" bang into limp/safe mode or else will only rev and then "bang"...safe mode(well you dont really get a bang ..just a lurch!! checked fluids all ok

Sympathy on the gearbox problem.

The XJ (308) XJ8 / XJR 1997 - 2003 section is the place to go for help and advice.

There's a recent new member in Edinburgh with an XJ8 just happens to be an auto box specialist. Might be a very useful contact.
