Default Greetings from Sweden!

Hello there!

First off, I'd like to thank all you members of the forum for all the information I've already gathered here, it has helped me a lot in creating a broader general understanding of my car!

A little backstory as to why I ended up with a Jaguar - I'd gotten a job that required me to commute some 75 km one-way, which forced me to get a car, my first ever. I bought a cheap old Volvo 360GLT from 1984 which I drove for about a year or so. Then I realized, sitting in a car that is about as comfortable and silent as a go-kart (just slightly over-exaggerated) for 2 hours a day is... less than optimal.

I started to look for something a bit more luxurious, or at least less noisy. I read up on old audi A8's, bmw 7-series, lexus LS400, mercedes s-class, and of course the jaguar xj40. I figured, since I'm on a budget, I'm going to have to do a lot of the repairs myself - that means I'd have to really like the car lest I'd get sick and tired of it, and the jaguar stood out as the option with the most "charm and soul".

So, in August last year, a week before my 26th birthday, I got the car I'd been dreaming about for over a year - a Daimler 4.0l, picnic tables and all, from 1990 - one year my senior! Far from mint condition, 300k kilometers, light ticking from the engine, a dent in the boot lid and it had been standing still for a while, but it had passed the vehicle inspection with praise. After a test ride I placed an offer, and then smiled for 3 hours during the ride home - more comfortable than the train ride there!

Since then I've been fixing minor issues as they arise, some leaks, some rust, charging issues etc. At the moment I'm in the process of changing some things with the steering rack / old SLS system, which is why I decided to join the forum; to be able to ask about a few details I couldn't find in other threads about SLS conversion!

TL;DR: Bought an old Jaguar, now I'm spending my free time trying to keep it up and running.

Welcome.

Well done, and a Daimler in the bargain, well done indeed.

Welcome to the forum Rehn,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

You've changed the metric wheels?

It sounds like you've already found your way to the XJ40 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the Europe Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/europe-42/
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Hello, Rehn,
Congratulations on your new Jaguar!
Smiling 3 hours on the drive home will give you a hint of how Many of us feel about driving our Jaguars. Every time I get into my car a smile creeps across my face and stays there until I have to get out.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Thank you all! This forum seems even more active than I thought!

Regarding the metric wheels, I suspect one of the two previous owners might've changed them. According to "the internet", you could chose to opt out of the metrics from 1990 onward in some markets (mine is a car from the Netherlands originally, the guy I got it from imported it to Sweden in 96) so I suppose my car could've been delivered with regular rims - however, there's a teardrop-styled Michelin TDXV 390 spare tyre in the boot! The car is registered to the Swedish car registry with 225/65R/15.

The teardrops on the first two pictures in my original post were the set that came with the car when I bought it, and since I had researched the car for some time, that was one of the things I made sure to check - if the tyres were 390 mm or 15/16 inch, to avoid spending as much as I did on buying the whole car every time I wanted to change tyres.

The five-spoke wheels on the last picture came from an x300, I got them since I wanted to be able to drive all year round and my car only came with one set. Oh, and I bought them, four rims and five tyres with good thread depth, for the same price as two cheap tyres would've cost. Can't complain about that!
