Smile Hello to all from NYC. New member with X308.

I have just acquired an X308 with 150,000+ miles and have been repairing things over the last month. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this site as I have fixed a TON of things by searching thru the archives of old posts. The first repair I did was the ABS module. Yesterday I repaired the trunk lights base on a ten-year-old thread about the broken wire in the trunk/boot. Replaced all the speaker woofers as the surrounds were bad. I saved some dash lights by taking it apart and cleaning the contacts. This week is the rear main seal and the oil pan gasket.

The motor was replaced by the prior owner when the tensioners went and took the original motor with it. I have no idea if the tensioners were done on the replacement motor. I have no idea how many miles are on the current motor. It does not bode well that the oil pan gasket and main seal were not done prior to the motor being installed.

It has been nice to have the time to read how to repair the car myself.

I am located in NYC.

Regards to all,

Ian

Welcome to the forums Ian,

Good to have you with us.

It sounds like you've already found your way to the X308 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. You can also use the US Northeast Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/us-northeast-35/ to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Welcome. When you get access to that rear main seal, check just above it, there's a large plug that seals the back of the main oil galley in the block. I bet you find that its barely finger tight and leaking like a sieve and that its not the rear main seal. Its got a rubber gasket under it. Make sure to replace that gasket and cinch it up tight. We can't find an official torque spec for this anywhere. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...y-plug-215432/. I think I finally chose to do 25ft lbs. I wouldn't fault them too bad as usually those giant plugs have a copper or aluminum crush washer and are torqued to where they'd never come loose. But no, its more like a little o-ring. If you didn't know, you wouldn't think to replace it. And you can go ahead and replace the rear main while you're in there for good measure.

Default Rear of my motor

It is the Main seal, thank you for pointing out the plug/bolt. Was not leaking but was not tight either. Would never have checked it.
