Default Hello from France

Hello there, my name is Dave. I'm a Brit living in France and a Land Rover nut - currently have 4

I am considoring buying a second-hand Jaguar, either XJ8 or S-type as a high days and holidays car and I'm looking for buying and ownership advice.

I will be doing my own servicing, so any tricks and tips would be welcome

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave,

Those were also my choices when I went back to Jag I decided onthe S however if I wanted something to hoon around France in I think I'd have to go the XJ8 route.
Whichever you decide on have fun and I'm sure you will find all the support you need here.

welcome to the forum, plenty of advice about both cars available. Price wise, a UK car might be a good option, second hand French prices can be eye watering. OK so you have the slight disadvantage of RHD but importing is easy.

Hi Norri, thanks for the reply. Re the XK8 and hooning - I've had a number of "quick" cars in the past including 911's so to be honest I feel like I've got past that bit, I'm looking now for cosseting luxury that I feel very few other cars can provide apart from Jaguar.

So, XJ8 or S-type???? That is the question? I'm thinking of 4ltr versions of both.

Cheers
Dave

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
Having had 3 Rover 75's which were all excellent cars 2 saloons and a Tourer, and as I did not like the facelift version, I choose a 2005 Jaguar facelift S-Type, 2.5 V6 with a manual gearbox and have been very please with it. Not so many storage areas as the 75 cabin has and the Boot is a bit shallow, though the same floor area.
I would go for the 2005 model year facelift.
Here are some pictures of my 75's so our USA friends know what we are talking about.

Hi Richard, thanks for the reply. I'm currently buying all my cars in the uk because as you say, they are loads cheaper than in France. Tbh I don't find the rhd issue to be an inconvenience and have now had plenty of experience with the French importation procedure -they do keep changing the rules though.

Recently I read that if you buy a car registered in the UK after 2003 then the UK v5 should suffice for the French authorities, in terms of european conformité, but I'll believe that when I see it !!!! Certificat de Conformité from Land Rover France cost 180 euros each one, so any changes that allows me to register a car without that would be welcome indeed.

So, S-type or XJ8???? I had a mate in the uk who have a v6 engined S-type and to be honest I thought it was a bit flat - don't know if it was a 2.5 or 3.0ltr, but as this will be a "high days and holidays car" fuel consumption not being a major concern, I'll be going for a V8 man-sized engine !!!!

Can anyone give me dry weights for the XJ8 4ltr and the S-type 4ltr - is it the same engine in both applications? BHP and torque the same?

Many thanks for the replies and advice

Cheers
Dave

Hmm, I changed a V5 last year, unfortunately unless there has been a significant change in new V5's for later cars even the EU V5 does not have all the details as required by the certificate of conformité, without which one is pretty much stuffed.

Can no longer do a CT etc etc.

However I always go through the DRIRE to get the car identified, costs a whole lot less than the constructor. Bout 80€ IIRC.

I'll dig out my stuff and send you a PM.

Then I'm going to flip flop and vote for the S you can be pampered if you wish and still hoon a little if the notion takes you.

Hey biglad, welcome to the site, great to have you with us
Nice intro too, makes a nice change!

I've upgraded you to FFA so you can enjoy all the features of the site and post up some pics when you get a chance!
Please post your queries re the S type XJ etc into the relevant sections though.......this section is only meant for a brief welcome really + you are more likely to get much more info / advice in those sections.

XJ8 would be my vote

Good luck
