Hellow From A 1993 XJS Coupe Owner in Richmond
I have owned several jags over the years. The first was a 1973 silver XJ6 purchased in 1974. What a great car until it started to rust out. Had it restored and modified with triple SUs and knock of wire wheels. Looked great under the hood and standing still but destroyed ride comfort and overwhelmed the passenger compartment with engine noise. Lesson learned: modifications can cause features you like about a car to disappear. The next was a 1976 XJC 12 cylinder coupe purchased in 1990. A fun car with lots of power but wind noise in the cabin was a problem from poor sealing of front to rear windows. In 2003 I purchased a ruby red XJS Coupe with a light tan interior. After driving it on a regular basis I let it sit for long periods of time. The AC and heating have failed, cabin airflow has seized up, radio failed, radio antenna does not extend fully, right front caliper seized up, transmission mount needs replacing, rear calipers need replacing and finally the brake accumulator may be going bad. Other than that body and interior are perfect, engine idles and performs like new which is not bad for a care with 129,000 mile under the hood.
I used to do basic maintenance myself on the 2 XJs I once owned but stopped doing that once I bought the XJS. I was working and traveled for my job in institutional asset management. Now that I have retired I have started doing the repair work myself. So far I have had the radio repaired and now functioning in the car, the radio antenna has been repaired without replacement, transmission mounts replaced, and front calipers replaced. I am studying replacing rear calipers and rotors by leaving the IRS in place or removing the unit. Will seek forum advice on each approach
I look forward to sharing tips on my repairs with member as well as getting advice
