Here for no good reason

So I don't own a Jag and never have, but I'm sort of starting to want one.
Thing is, I want a few other cars/bikes too, and they may well be ahead of the Jag in line, but I'll certainly get to one eventually, so I figured I'd better register.
Honestly, part of the reason I'm here is so that knowledgeable people can convince me that buying a 95-97 XJ6 or XJR is a wise decision. I'm very skeptical, but I'm rooting for you, because I absolutely want one.
Right now I have the Anti-XJ6, which is to say a Miata. A Jag is looking more appealing as we get into the winter/fall season, but admittedly, something like a Miata will once again look more appealing as we get back towards summer (i.e. when there are scheduled track days again).

its falls down to the condition of the car, service history, repaired/replaced items, how much money you have, how handy are you with vehicles.
you dont need to answer those, these cars are high maintenance . unlike the miate

Welcome Konami, we can't guarantee you a 95-97 XJ won't have maintenance and minor maintenance items...cuz you will. However, if you love the looks and feel of the car, and can accept that, the XJ will be perfect for you.
I'm no early model XJ expert, but there are some issues you need to consider in that car. Since you've been browsing awhile, maybe now your ready to ask some of those hard questions about the car if you can't find the information there.
We wish you all the luck in the world!

Actually, having just replaced a crankshaft of all things on the Miata, maybe I shouldn't be worried about it. Whatever breaks on an X300 cannot be much more troublesome than a crankshaft.
I'll search around before I start randomly firing off questions, of course. I know it'll be a bit of a handful, and I can easily search to find out what tends to go wrong. My question is more along the lines of "is it worth it?", but that can only be answered by owners of the cars.

youll need a list of common problems on the vehicle, then check off and see how many of those items have been repaired or replaced on the vehicle your purchasing.
it all depends on how much time and money you have, and how much youd really like the vehicle.
is it worth it ? sure its a jaguar.

Jaguar versus Miata...4 words:
Compare crash test ratings.
(plus Jags are MUCH sexier than Miatas...lol)

Welcome,
Looking like a Jaguar is possible but feeling like a Jaguar is impossible ... Nothing compares to ride quality for Jaguar .
If I happened to buy a Jaguar , I would go for X300s like you mention . Those AJL6 engines are rock solid .
XJR is a different beast ,less comfort but more performance wise . But you would still have a Jaguar which is very nice

Hey KT welcome to the site and I hope you enjoy your time here.
You don't have to own a Jag to be part of our community. There are loads of great freindly people here, good info and fun to be had in the off topic section.
Check out the relevant section and ask questions till your hearts content. Maybe some of the techs will help out too.
Good luck

Is this a weak point of the earlier V8's? I assume this is a timing belt/chain tensioner?
This is the kind of info I'm looking for. Everyone I've talked to on my other boards (i.e. people with zero Jag experience) have said "stay away from all the V8's, get a 95-97 I6).
The Miata is actually not the least safe vehicle I've ever owned in terms of crash ratings. I bet the 914-6 was way worse.
