Default hey all,new member 2004 xj8 vdp

hey everyone, im in the process of trading in my 2008 honda civic coupe for a 2004 black on silver vanden plas.

the price is right for a 1-owner 70k miles vehicle.

see footnotes below for shorttake

i also have a 2000 BRG vanden plas thats had its fair share of issues from breather hoses throwing cel's and throttle body cleanings to limp modes and currently a busted 1st gear on the car.

this particular 2004 was owned for 4 years and 8 months by the previous owner. the dealership itself has no service history but all the service history is on the carfax.

its had the major services completed every 10k miles.

my major concern is since the cars been sold at auction 01/24/2008 with 70k miles.

there hasnt been a registered owner and its basicly sitting around for a year or so
so its been more or less sitting for a while with few miles put on her.

any recommended precautions/service i should do asap other then oils filtered coolant and sparkplugs.

im set on getting the transmission oil changed cause the zf on the 2000 blew at 100k.

footnote

about to purchase 04 vdp
hasnt been daily'd for a while
recommended service performed at purchased ?

edited in some pictures. since everyone loves pics

heres my 2008 civic that im working on swapping for the 2004 vdp

hey thanks pal.

just got back from some very tough negotiations, man used car salesmen are a-holes.

after about 5hours or back and forths and waiting and checking codes on the car, i think i got a pretty awesome deal on the 1 owner vdp. 15k out the door with all taxes title inspection and registration.

the car had a CEL and we managed to read it. it was the good old lean bank 1 lean bank 2.

i went ahead and assumed it was from the junk old gas and dirty fuel system and just had it cleared.

once i put some shell v-power fuel system detox in her, with some shell v-power premium, fresh ngk's, and some castrol syntec > im sure shell run just great.

even in CEL mode with junk gas the 4.2 w the 6speed really outperformed the 4.0.

hopefully within the next few days i can take delivary of the car, need to work out a settlement with honda for what i owe on the civic. then lock in financing with my credit union.

im pumped, cheers all

-Vic

hey all, just a little update.
the deal basicly fell through on the 2004 VDP. between my credit union not financing a vehicle over 4yrs old and a 10% apr from the sellers bank, financing wasnt a responsible option. as for paying cash i could have made a large deposit and financed just a few thousand, i needed to unload my civic and they guy just didnt give me a realistic trade in. it would have forced me to rollover $3000 into the new loan. not an option seeing as if i go and sell the car, i can make a few thousand on top of payoff.

basicly the peices didnt fall into place so now ill just windup correcting my 2000 vdp untill the civic is either sold or payed off.

anyone know of any member that is parting out ?

i need a working transmission for a 2000 xj8l vanden plas,

drivers side front fender, front bumper, and a hood preferbly British racing green.also a d/s headlight assembly.

if anyone can point me in the right direction id really appreciate it. between ebay and these local salvage yards. prices seem to be overly inflated.

also im in nyc so anythin in the north eastern region would be great. thanks again -victor

hey all. wound up picking up an 04 xj8 with nav on wednesday. the deal on the vdp didnt turn out well.

1 owner, accident free, full dealerservice records and 2 years left on a jaguar service contract.

heres photos from today , was buying antifreeze to do a flush at straus discount auto and my lovely wife was cleaning the leather with meguairs cleaner/conditioner.

i really would have loved the extras that comes with a VDP, but this one is in overall better mechanical condition and the color is beutifull IMO. quartz

other then preventative maintenance all its needs is the rear brakes serviced. the parking brake seems to stick at times and i dont think they grab at all during driving. just very little.

im going to have the rotors pads replaced. and brake fluid replaced as well > then reconfig the parkbrake. hopefully that will solve that issue.

it just seems to always be slightly engaged and i feel it holding back the upshifts.

since thurs ive completely detox'd and detail'd the interior, detox'd and claybarred the exterior (crappy weather and work leaves me with no wax yet)

poured in shell v-power fuel system treatment, topped off with shell v-power 93.

replaced oil with castrol 5w-30 and an stp filter for now ( 1000 mile de-tox run with this oil)

and today i flushed the cooling system, i had a hardtime refilling the system it would only take around 2 quartz at a time then 2 more then 2 more. was a mess

now aside from the rear brakes only other maintenance is transmission service (flush, reflash) spark plugs and cabin air filters. wish me luck everyone and im very happy with my new to me jag : )

Default Nice car! I'm looking at 2004+ XJRs

Any good advice on What I should be aware of, with high mileage vehicles? Carfax, then maintenance records, then timing belt and general inspection.

Anything you suggest that I really look into? Thanks

Quentin

Im not aware of any timing chain issues with these motors, as for what to look out for ? jerky transmission shifts, noisy wheel bearing, breaks, smooth idle.

basicly things you check on all used cars,

You need to get the parkbrake sorted out if it is sticking on slightly as you say it is. This is a known issue with the electric parking brakes, (also on the S-Type and 2007-on XK and Jaguar have issued a TSB, I believe. If not fixed it will eat rear pads for lunch, and probably the rear discs as well. I would suggest pads and discs are checked for wear at the front as well.

Engines are not a problem now, (they used to be on the previous model), but early air compressors for the air suspension have been troublesome - Jaguar now do service exchange units at lower cost than they used to be. Very cold weather seems to exacerbate this problem, and I suspect there may be more water gets trapped in the pipes than maybe should; ask a railroader about cold weather and air brakes !!

Some people have had auto transmission problems, mostly cured with a software upgrade, but not always.

Upshot of the above is - get a warranty covering the major components at least.
