New member to the site, and jaguar in general. Just picked up a barn find. 1980 XJS v12. Wondering how hard they are to work on.. and being fuel injection, what sort of steps do I need to take before trying to start this car. It was last driven in 1994!
it was parked in neutral, rolled out fairly easy.. I.aired up the tires and she loaded up easy.
I am a mobile mechanic so I should be able to handle most things. Any help is appreciated in advance.
It is known in V12 talk as a PreHE, it will become clearer as you get into it.
26 years is going to test you a tad.
They are SIMPLE to work on, methodically is the key.
At the top of the XJS Tech Section, there are a number of stickies that will answer most of your questions.

Not trying to get WAY into my pockets with this... but what are cars like this worth? Is it somewhat rare, or just an average car of this time period. I don't want to drop alot of cash into it, and not be able to get much from it later on. There is minimal cancer, overall looks to be a very solid car.. hood shocks are no good, and hood won't latch closed.. but other than that its a solid car from what I can see so far. Clear title, and 2 sets of keys.
The XJS had a mixed reception when it was introduced and values of used examples were on the floor for many years. They have started to rise in recent years and good examples will always sell but don't expect them ever to reach E-Type levels. A used Jaguar is not a way to make money.
Jaguar expertise comes at an expensive hourly rate. Your big advantage is the ability to do repair and maintenance work yourself but parts prices may still be a shock.

Hello,
Congratulations on your Barn Find Jaguar XJS! You will have SO much fun getting that back on the road!

So after looking over the car a little more, I've come across info showing this car has 74669 actual miles.. as per speedometer and the inspection paperwork in the glove box. Any good estimates on what this car may be worth? Motor isn't locked up...as I accidentally bumped the key too far when rolling up the cracked windows...as now its not in a garage. Wrestling over the idea of getting it running... and just posting it as it is, as I don't have a garage to keep it in.
thanks again in advance. Passenger side Trunk Drivers side Drivers fender rear

Congratulations; looks like a cool Jag.
Being an '80 it might be one of the rare hot rod, high-compression pre-HE engines that were used for just a short while. With the last six of your VIN we can find out.
As for "How hard to work on?", well, that's as much a frame-of-mind thing as anything else . As Grant says, being methodical is important. The slower you work, the faster the job gets done. The car will fight you if you try to take shortcuts or get frustrated. You know what I mean, I'm sure.
Post in the XJS section to get into the real nitty gritty of things
