Just purchased a '74 E-Type III, trying to resolve the VIN number, doesn't seem to return any results (VIN ud1s74859bw)???

The E-Type pre-dates the VIN system. The number you quote is a Chassis Number. UD1S74859BW decodes as follows:
U = US specification
D = 1973MY
1S74859 = 2 + 2 LHD (324 before the last produced in July 1973)
BW = Automatic ( Borg Warner)
