Default Hoping to be a 1st time Jag owner soon

Hi forum people

My name's James, I live in the UK and I'm hoping to own my first Jag sometime before the end of the year. I've decided to jump from a hot(ish) hatch to an XFR, and am a little nervous about the potential bills if I pick a duffer on the used market. Hopefully I'll be able to learn a lot from this forum to minimise the chance of that happening!

Hello, James,
Any time you buy a used car, there's a reason someone got rid of it; maybe several reasons. That's just the chance you take with used cars and not only Jaguars. On the other hand, we read in here of some Screaming deals sometimes, and several good deals.

As you've mentioned, research is the key, not only into the model but the specific car, and it's a good idea to size up the seller while you're at it.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Thanks for the welcomes!

I do wonder what someone would move an XFR on for - hard to think of many potential 'upgrades', especially as Jag haven't released a new XFR yet... As I'm in no rush, I'm hoping to grab a screaming deal should one come along!

In the UK, few Jaguars are purchased by individuals and the majority are fixed term lease. There's always good bargains from main dealers on vehicles handed back at the end of lease when the big initial depreciation on new cars makes for attractive pricing. These vehicles should have had all scheduled maintenance carried out on time and any recall work done. Warranty will also be transferable and dealers are best placed to rectify any faults prior to purchase.

If used vehicle stock level is high, dealers will put such vehicles out to auction or to a small number of marque specialists. These specialists have hard won reputations and only deal in the best.

After that, general used car dealers and private sellers come with increasing levels of risk.

With any used Jaguar, comprehensive service history is crucial, preferably backed up with a file full of bills to prove the stamps in the book.

Many members arrive here with their recent purchases and what they think is a minor fault only to find repairs can sometimes be very expensive. I always sit in the car with the driver's handbook and make sure everything works - all the switches and toys. Twenty minutes spent doing this shows up any problems which can either be rectified by the seller or factored into the price.

Choose carefully and Jaguar ownership will be a real pleasure.

Unfortunately I don't think my budget will stretch to something end of lease - I'm guessing a typical lease will be up to 5 years, whereas I think my budget might stretch to a below-average mileage 2010MY example. They still seem to be available from Jag dealers even at the cheaper end of the market, but I'm sceptical of how co-operative they'll be if something goes wrong on a 6yr old car after a few months, so unfortunately I think I'm going to have to take a bit of a punt whatever I end up buying.
