Default How to reset CEL on 2001 XK8

Hello,

I am new to the forum and have a 2001 XK8. I replaced the valve cover gaskets and wanted to make sure that the spark plug cover gaskets went over the plugs and connected properly, before wrapping everything up. I started the engine (hadn't hooked up any of the air-intake/filter connections) and got a "reduced performance" warning, and the CEL came on. I know the CEL came on because of my "test"...Does anyone know how I can reset/turn off the CEL? I disconnected the battery for over 20 minutes, hoping this would reset the computer, but it didn't. I would prefer to do the reset myself vs. taking it in somewhere. Thanks so much for any input!

By the way, I'm in Sata Cruz, CA, my car has 54K miles on it and I'm planning on replacing the high pressure PS hose tomorrow (I'm told this hose does usually need to be replaced over time). Thanks again and hopefully can get some input on resetting the CEL.

Thanks, Cadillac!

I've looked at the approved list of OBDII's on the General Tech Help. I appreciate the quick response and will maybe see if I can get a freebie check by Pep Boys, etc...If I can't, then I'll make the investment.

Best regards!

Thank you, Jim, for allowing me full access! Norri, I'm getting along great and appreciate getting such good info from this forum! Concerning the CEL, I contacted Pep Boys and they said they would run a free code read, but to reset the CEL would be $89...Started the car to go there and the light had turned off! Also found that it would reset itself after 100 miles? Anywho, used the search to find out how to reindex the windows, and will make sure to stay in the XK forum when I need any additional help. Thanks so much to all!

welcome aboard Goonser. Frankly, take the (next) plunge and buy the OBD reader. The gremlins like to toss in the odd little trouble code that will restrict your ride (and your enjoyment). For a relatively low cost the reader will let you know if it is something to be concerned about and let you clear the "harmless" ones so the drive can continue at the proper pace instead of limping home.

You can get a cheap capable reader for less than $90 and no it wont reset itself after 100 miles. Thats monitor status without any codes or faults present. There are many codes that will reset after so many key cylces, but not all and they very for time frame and counts. Just get a reader.
