Default ifs seal question from new guy

Hi - new guy here- I have an 86 XJS that I am trying to restore- in a million pieces right now.

I will start taking pics and posting them as I start to put everything bac together. I really screwed up on the rack & pinion the other day and would love some help.

Took it apart to redo the seals and all was going well until I got to the seal at the top of the pinion near the steering shaft. Took the "c-clip" out OK then the seal -- i thought it was one seal but when I came back to it later there are 2 seals.

One has a metal part and the other is all rubber. I have no idea which goes where -- does the rubber one go in first and the metal/rubber on top or vice versa--which way do they go in? (by that I mean they each have a rim on them so does rim go down or up or ???? I feel like a dummy but I just did not see it when I took it apart -- any pics or diagrams or typed help would be much appreciated.

Should I post this somewhere else? Thanks Dave S

Welcome to the forum Dave,

Sounds like you need to get working with the camera and post pics of the rack parts to help identify them.

Follow this link XJS - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XJS section for help, advice and information. The guys there have also had their cars into a million pieces - and back together again.

Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User ID button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the US Southern MidWest Region section by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...s-ky-tn-al-67/ to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forum.
