intro
After adding some information to the very informative threat of Don B he asked me to introduce myself to you all. So sit down for this long read.
My first car was a Citroen 2CV. It had an air cooled 2 cylinder 600cc boxer engine. The car was around 700kg so the small engine worked fine except driving on a highway with strong headwinds. At some times you couldn’t get beyond 90km/h. Great fun though!
Some years later I bought a Nissan 200 SX. A 2+2 seater with a 1.8 litre turbo engine giving it 170 hp. You might know the model since it is now a classic in the Japanese drifting scene.
We bought our first Jaguar when my wife was pregnant of our first. She owned a two door VW Golf and we figured out that putting a baby on the back seat in a two door car is not something you’ll want to do on daily bases. So we started to look around for a four door car and we ended up buying a X300 Sovereign. Until now people always frowned their eyebrows at this cause-effect, but to the members on this forum it will probably makes sense.
The Sovereign was a 1996 westminster blue with black seat interior. An 3.2litre, 6 cylinder in line witch gave a lovely deep hum around 170 km/h (on the German highways towards holidays in Italy, Croatia, etc)
We did experience some interesting malfunctions though. Every now and then the car won’t start. Contact was on, everything fired up apart the starting engine. Turned out that the switch that checks the position of het J bar was a bit wobbly. If it’s out P or N you are not allowed to start, and that’s what the switch sometimes mistaking said to the computer.
At some other point we had a situation where the starting engine worked, but the engine wouldn’t fire up. Ignition or fuel were the usual suspects, but both were checked a few times and were OK. Eventually my dealer found the problem in a faulty connecter in the wiring to the fuel pump in the trunk leaving the engine 1 out 50 times with too little fuel to start.
Another few kids later we bought a Pontiac Transporter 7 seater (for the love of God, never buy a Pontiac). After a year we changed it to a Mitsubishi 7 seater (slightly better). Those were the cars for family rides but dad changed the sovereign for a black/black 1998 XKR 4.0 V8 S/C.
The XKR was lots of fun and was completely problem free. In three years that I owned it I only had the regular scheduled maintenance. Not even a light bulb was changed!
At that point I changed work and didn’t use the XKR much so we changed it to a KIA 7 seater. A few years later the kids grew beyond the point of needing space consuming booster seats. So time again for a jag, and after having a long look at a Daimler LWB, we went for a black/black 2003 XJR 4.2 V8 S/C (I just don’t like the light coloured leather interiors). It has 20inch rims, sun roof, back seat audio and all the opps that I think comes standard with a XJR.
I’m driving it for a year now and apart from the blower problem, I only had problems with a “DSC not availably” notification in my ODO display. It pops up at random moments, there is not really a connection to the type of driving at that point. I happens random when acceleration, braking or driving at constant speed with cruise control on. Also outside temperatures or humidity seems of no influence; it is just pretty vague. The dealer replaced the brake switch and brake position sensor under the breaking paddle. That helps a bit. Instead of once every week it now pops up once a month. If you park, switch the ignition off for a second or two and restart the notification is gone. I don’t mind the notification and 99,9% of the time you don’t need DSC (and when the notification turns on I just cruise to a place to park and restart). The problem with this is that the suspension gets really stiff making a ride with a DSC warning over an uneven road uncomfortable. The problem is not that bad that I want to spent time in trying to solve it. I hope that at one point one of you will post a solution.
So that’s about it for my jag history. Hope you liked it.

Welcome.
Well done, that was a full coffee read, quite candid in places.
The 2CV, my sister had one of them, and for her it was good, coz she never checked her cars internals, so coolant not being required was a blessing. She killed her Renault R8 that way.

That's quite a story, Tom.
Nix is my first Jaguar experience, and I've only had her just over 2 years, but I'm sure it's true what others in here say, once you've driven a Jaguar, Nothing else stacks up to it. That certainly seems the case in your situation.
Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.
