Red face Let the fun begin!

I recently bought a 1998 XJ8L. Love the car but last week had a very bad incident. Tried to start in the morning and engine fired but ran rough for just a second and then quit. Would not start again. Towed to a shop where the mechanic worked for a couple of hours and finally concluded the engine had hydro-locked on one cylinder due to gas leaking through a faulty injector?. $5000. later I have a different engine with 70,000 miles on it with a one year, unlimited mileage warranty. Hope the transmission is up to the challenge.

Welcome to the forum. Hope that is the last of your problems with your new Jag. There is plenty of great info in the XJ8 section on this site and a lot of great people to help you out. Best of luck with your Jag. Good to see another member from NorCal aboard.

I have never heard of hydraulic locking due to fuel in the cylinder, this has to be very rare. Most cases occur when owners speed through fords or deep puddles, and water enters the inlet manifold. I saw a Rover 75 with a rod through the block side about 2 years ago in my local garage. Owner had gone very fast into a flood, (not unusual in rainy England), heard a lot of banging and clattering although engine carried on running. Noise went down a lot in volume, (the bent rod made room for itself !) so he carried on all week until BANG !

No matter what a dealer or independent shop tells you, you'll learn that you can usually do the repair a lot cheaper by doing it yourself. For example, on the XK8s they have a common problem with the ABS computer. Most Jag dealers and indy shops will tell you it needs to be replaced for $2800. Usually it can be easily repaired for free. Just doing some searching on the forums. Then ask some questions. You might find that your $5000 repair is much cheaper. It might take a little of your own elbow grease, though.

Finally got my car back today with the 'new' 70,000 mile engine. It comes with a one year, unlimited mileage warranty which is comforting after a $5000. repair bill. I'm like most other Jag owners on this site in that I love my Jaguar! Got my fingers crossed that my troubles are over for a little while. Driving to Las Vegas from Yuba City, CA next week. Don't know which is the biggest gamble; the Vegas tables or the drive. More about the trip next week.
