Default My first Jaguar

Hey all.

I just picked up a 1994 XJ6 with less then 100k miles on it. The body looks great and the seats are perfect. It has a few issues that I am hoping to work out and then it will be a fun car. I have liked the looks of the Jaguars(at least the older ones) since I was a kid. I saw this one on Craigs list and had to go look.

The good.
It drives nicely.
The body and paint are great.
The seats and interior are pretty good.
It was for sale for 800 bucks.

The bad.
The headliner is drooping bad.
The battery will not keep a charge. I will be taking it in to get tested in a day or so.
There is a weird circle with an X through it that comes up. I am not sure what this stands for.
The cup holder needs fixed.
The whole thing needs scrubbed and waxed. Me being in Washington I will have to wait for a dry day for that one.

Welcome, Mortonarts:
Holy cow, 800 bucks! The 'bad' list sound all pretty standard for an old XJ40, and nothing too serious - provided that the battery is just a bad battery. The circle with the X through it indicates a burned out bulb. Check all your lights, but odds are good that it's the bulb failure module (BFM) itself; which is only an annoyance.

Welcome again and hope to see you around our section of the forum!
Scott

Welcome to the forum, mortonarts, and congratulations on your new Jag!
I'm a new member here also, but a longtime owner of our second Jaguar XJ40, which is the factory code name of your '94 XJ6. Our '93 has done 195,000 miles and is still going strong, so yours has very low mileage.

The issues you describe are all very common on the XJ40 and you can resolve them all with a little effort.

Regarding the battery not holding a charge, most auto parts stores will test the battery for you to see if it's actually a dying battery or a malfunction of the charging system. XJ40s are very sensitive to low battery voltage, and a common cause is corrosion of the battery power connections throughout the car, as well as on some of the ground studs. If a test of your electrical system shows your battery and alternator are both good and any parasitic current drains are minimal, then it would be worth cleaning all the battery power connections and grounds and checking your fuse boxes for problems. Below are links to photos I took of this work, as well as recovering the headliner (sorry I didn't take photos of removing and reinstalling the headliner in the car because my hands were full, but I can send you the instructions if you don't find them on this forum).

Jaguar offers a cup holder repair kit for insane money, but it's less expensive to either repair it yourself, or to purchase a used one on eBay and, if the color is wrong, just swap the salvaged cup holder into your console lid.

Do check all the exterior bulbs before you worry about Bulb Failure Modules. Even bulbs that are rarely lit can trigger the "Bulb Out" symbol on the instrument panel, so check the high-beam headlamps, side marker lamps, fog lamps, etc.

Cheers,

Don

I dropped the battery off at Batteries Plus last night and they are running a long test on it. I will know if it is good by today. We had a major Rain yesterday and the floorboards on the Drivers side is soaked. I have leaks coming from somewhere. The wierd part is that around the door it feels dry. I am hoping it is not coming from the engine compartment. Once i get the water issue sorted out I will get started on cleaning grounds and such as well. I figure the electrical system for this thing can't be any worse then the old Lucas Electrical stuff from my old spitfire. That thing I had to take apart once a week to clean the grounds it seemed like.
