Default My son's first car

I bought my son, who will get his D.L. in October, a '91 XJS classic collection with a V12 today. (What have I done...) any way.
I currently own a '77 Triumph Spitfire, this one with a ford engine and trans. I have owned two other Spitfires, a '79 and a '73 that I bought when I was 19, and a '73 XJ6 that I believe was cursed.
That gives me a step up as I have meet Lucus "the prince of darkness" many times and I am not afraid.
Now onto my son's XJS, I bought it for $1000. The roof, trunk lid and cowl have the clear coat disease. There are four areas of rust, one on each rear fender lip, one on the drivers rocker and a small spot on the part that sticks up by the trunk lid, I'll learn what that's called shortly. The interior usable, the leather has a lot of cracking but no holes or tears other than the welting on the out side of the front seats. The wood needs refinished. The PO or Lucus has been at the switches, window motors and such. It starts, stops and shifts good up to the point that the temp gauge gets to the N, that's when I shut it down. There seems to be a water leak above the Pass. side motor mount, will be tracking that down over the next couple days. Then onto why it idles at 1300rpm at start up then climbs to 2200rpm then bounces back and forth between those. Then the hoses...

P.S. Don't tell anyone, but I kinda hope he doesn't want it after awhile, then it will be mine.

Welcome to the forum Spitfire 2300,

Good to have you here with us at Jaguar forums. The 'part that sticks up from the trunk lid'. That'll be the Flying Buttress - quite appropriate considering your forum username!

Follow this link XJS - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XJS section advice, help and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the US Mid West Region section by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/m...n-mo-oh-wi-39/ to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forum.

Welcome Spitfire:

Greetings from the Midwest Region.

I'm not sure what a D.L. is, but it must be an achievement if your son gets a Jaguar as a reward! Congrats on the purchase and best of luck on the on-going improvements to make this a great running car.

Cheers,
Scott

Thanks for the warm welcome. He gets his drivers license in Oct. so we are spending some time changing all the hoses under the hood.
