Had a couple close calls over the years with buying a Series II's but the time wasn't right and the urge eventually became dormant.
However something happen earlier this year with a reread of John Egan's great book "Saving Jaguar" and the realisation that I had run out of excuses and just maybe it was time for a Series III's or a XJ40. However the cars I was seeing were usually rusty, tatty, very high mileage or in most cases all three! After a bit more research a X300 seemed to fit the bill of what was important to me: rust free, reliable, a straight six, at least 4 speeds and importantly cheap!
After setting some ground rules like it having to be a 4 litre with working airconditioning and less than 160,000km, I bought a 3.2 Sport with a dud AC expansion valve and 139,000km earlier this year. So nearly got it right!
So after doing all the usual deferred maintenance these cars all seem to suffer due to their low value (changing the rear shocks, the O2 sensors, coolant temperature sensor, fitting a Range Rover MAF, fixing the engine oil and power steering hose leaks, replacing the headlining, fixing the torn drivers seat bolster, repainting the cam cover, replacing the cup holder mechanism and the thermostat etc) it's turned into a nice car that I've just completed a 1000km round trip in over a long weekend
Next jobs are: replace the evaporator and TX valve and regas, buy a battery cover for the key fob and just keep tidying up the paint and interior.
I can see you've already found your way to the X300 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.
