Default New Kent member with a question!

Hello all - Not a Jag owner yet (unfortunately), but hopefully I will be one in a very short amount of time!

I've just sold my Lotus Elise. As much as I loved it, it's rather extreme to run as an only car, and a Jag has always been at the back of my mind to own, so I'm taking the plunge now!

I wanted to pick the brains of the members here about S Type R's as I'm focussed on getting one of these. There's been a few to crop up on Autotrader, PH & eBay recently, all at varying prices (£4.5k-£14k) and mileages and wanted to hear your opinions.

I just missed out on the '06 grey STR at Hamilton's which I'm gutted about because it looked immaculate. It seemed to be at the pricier end of the scale at £8,500 , but I guess that's what they're worth? Today I went to see a black one in Surrey that's a year older with the same mileage (https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...01711091080628) that was £10k, but to be honest I'm not sure if it's worth it. I noticed:

1. All tyres as 7/8 years old, cracking and could do with replacement.
2. MOT and Service was last completed a year ago. At the last MOT there was an advisory for the brake pads getting low.
3. On cold start there was a belt squeal that was still there 10 minutes later (or there abouts).

Is it fair to think that the car is overpriced? The dealer has a couple more STR's and they haven't sold since November. Personally, I'm thinking the car is overpriced by a atleast £1500, and needs circa £1k spent to bring it up to scratch. Or am I being unreasonable?

Anyway, I've gone on long enough, so I shall sign off this post and I look forward to hearing from you

Philip

Welcome to the forum Philip,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

With any used Jaguar, service history is critical. Ideally you want to see a fat file of receipts for work done. The fewer owners the better and be suspicious if it's changing hands after a very short period.

The old tyres and expired MoT would discourage me. It indicates lack of preparation for sale at best and negligence at worst.

The squeal could just be the belt but it could be water pump bearing or belt tensioner.

None of this is a reason to reject a vehicle but it needs to be factored into the purchase price. Jaguar parts aren't cheap and Jaguar experitse is also costly if you can't DIY.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ed-v8-x200-15/ to the S-Type forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Hi Graham

Thanks for your response. I shall check out those links.

My phrasing is rather rubbish, so I wanted to confirm that the car still has an MOT, but this expires next month. It has a fully stamped up history book all by Jaguar main agent apart from the last one which was done by Moonwhizz. I saw the previous MOT certificates in there, but not sure if I saw invoices. The first owner was Jaguar cars (I'm guessing a demonstrator) and it's had one private owner who traded it in for a new Range Rover last year.

Welcome.

Your reasoning is sound, as is Graham's advice.

I always try?? to leave emotion at home, and I always will walk away it there is a sniff of dodgy stuff.

Philip,

The provenance is starting to sound much better. The previous owner has gone on to another JLR product so cannot have been unhappy with the car.

The vendor is doing himself no favours selling with a short MoT but it makes for a bargaining point, as do the tyres you mentioned earlier. Despite the eccentric name, I see Moonwhizz is a Jaguar specialist so the service history should be reliable. It should also be continuous (every 10K miles or 12 Months - whichever comes sooner). Question any gaps.

A used Jaguar is always a bit of a lottery so follow Grant's advice on the emotion.

Graham
