Hello All, I just purchased my first Jag. It's a Silver 2004 X-Type 3.0. The car is in excellent shape! One scratch, no dents, very, very clean car. I know nothing about Jags. Only one problem with the car...it only goes in reverse. Excited to dig into it!
Thanks, Jerry! Thought I'd brush up on my skillz! Really, If there was a car to fix I think this one is it. Can't wait to see what a Jaguar drives like. Here's couple of raw pics. Nothing has been touched yet. I think it's been sitting for almost a year.

Yeah, I've been accused of doing things a "little" backward at times! (Like maybe buying a JAG without having any prior knowledge of the cars or how to work on them)
Thanks so much, Graham!
I will definitely look at those other sub-forums. I'm into learning how to work on my JAG with the 'HOW TO' threads.
I've now hooked up the scanner and believe I have a starting point to diagnosing the issue(s). Luckily only one DTC!
If you haven't done so already you should add your car details to your signature to help others to help you.

The original owner was a career mechanic. He bought this car as a weekend car for he and his wife. They garaged it and drove it very little. He retired and became ill. His wife decided a newer car was a piece of mind for her, and so decided to sell her X-Type. I wasn't fast enough on the trigger the first time around to get it. The wife decided to gift it to one of her children who was interested in the Jag.
The son started driving the car and ended up having issues with it. It was taken to a shop where it sat for a very long time. The son decided he was done with the car and that he wasn't interested in putting the money into fixing it. When I heard of his decision, I jumped on the opportunity to get it. This time I was successful in acquiring the car!
I am very much looking forward to getting it running and driving it! I'm a weekend tinker'er with very little reservations of digging into things. It's nice to belong to a community like this where I can get tips, tricks, and insight from others that have already potentially gone done the path (or rat hole). If I end up with some insights along the way on a project, I look forward to giving back, sharing, and helping the next person tackling an issue.

When you say it’s in “excellent shape” but it only drives in reverse ??? I’ve got an Xtype 2003, which has an oil leak from the sump, which I’m told is a common complaint with them, but it’s going into the repair shop this evening to be repaired. The gasket alone was $84 Australian, but that’s life I suppose, as nothing is cheap on a Jaguar, so my friend, get ready for a big repair bill on your gearbox ?
The car is very clean, has less than 95K miles, has only a small scratch (rear bumper), no dents, no rust (a problem for older vehicle in our area) and the interior was very well kept. The car spent most of its life garaged.
I haven't found a leak of any oil or fluids anywhere. How many miles on your 2003? What issues have you had, just curious for future consideration.
Its only issue at the moment is only moving. I'm thinking this may only be the TRS (Transmission Range Sensor) and/or maybe the cable. Although, if it turns out to be more or even a complete transmission rebuild, I'm not all that concerned. I acquired the car for very little. I believe I can fix the transmission for somewhere between $200 USD and $3,000 USD (extreme high end). I can put $3K-$4K into it and still be ahead.
I am no stranger when it come to "not cheap" repairs and maintenance. I've got a BMW 535i-xDrive (e60) with lots of miles. I usually do most of the work myself. I've found that only few are really true mechanics. Most seem to be "replace it" guys. Most are not logical deductive problem solvers. Plus I really don't like how others treat my vehicles.
I've finally got her running! The transmission issue wasn't really that big of a deal. As my intuition was correct, only a few adjustments to the TRS, the shift cable, the linkage and lubrication. Seems the issue was the car wasn't going all the way into "D". Can you believe it!
All the fluids (oil, transmission, transfer case, differential, coolant, brake, power steering) have been changed, new fuel filter, new air filter, new plugs and coil packs, new brakes and rotors, new battery and she's running great!
I've got an appointments to get the windows tinted and a new headliner (it started falling this spring sitting out in the sun (car was garaged most of the time previously). New green wheel center caps and new burl walnut w/green leaper shift knob on order!
