Hello fellow Jaguar Enthusiasts -
I'm a long-time admirer of most things British; especially the cars and the language as it was meant to be spoken.
I am a 56 year old american male currently domiciled at Providence, Rhode Island.
Previous to that, I called San Francisco/The Bay Area/California my home.
I moved there when I was 19 years old and moved back to New England 22 years later.
Although I've been back 15 years, I will probably always consider myself a Californian.
It does that to you.
When people ask where I grew up, I say "San Francisco".
When I think for a sec., I can't help but feel that unless one moves away, strikes out on ones own and meets people that aren't from the same state, region, socio-economic circle, etc....when exactly does the growing occur?
That being said; tonight I will take delivery of a 1996 Jaguar X300 for the princely sum of $2,000.00
I've finally pulled the trigger on buying a car that represents more than mere transportation.
I've come close several times ( $9,000.00 '72 Jag E-Type fixed head coupe'....where would I park that in the Haight-Ashbury? or $4,000.000 for a Jensen Interceptor daily driver.....do I really want to watch that get picked to pieces parked outside on Potrero Hill?) but the lack of off-street parking, let alone a garage made the decision an easy one.
Vintage Triumphs, Nortons, Moto-Guzzis' and BMWs as well as a 35 foot sloop filled that hole.
Now I find myself married; a home owner with no children with a private parking lot with a little too much space left after I park the Volvo S40.
The wife asks me what I would like for a birthday/wedding anniversary/christmas present (all fall within a thirty day period) this year, I jokingly reply, " a Jaguar".....
Her reaction consists of handing me an envelope stuffed full of one hundred dollar bills.
I did my research and realized that a '95 - '97 X300 might be the least painful first experience with a Jaguar that I could subject myself to, all things being equal which they hardly ever are.
She mentioned my crazy plan to a few of her employees and one of them piped up; "My grandmother has a Jaguar that she wants to get rid of. My dad had it shipped up from Tennessee, installed new tires, shock absorbers and a battery and parked it in her garage a few months ago and now she doesn't want it any more. She bought a Hyundai and needs the garage."
Sure enough; it's a 1996, spotless, garaged, white X300 with just under 115,000k miles and everything works. All electrical switches work. The steering wheel works. The seats work. The windows and sunroof all work. The headliner is like new.
The only thing is, the kickdown/throttle cable needs adjustment.
It runs fine. It handles fine. It's clean. The leather is near perfect.
The adventure starts at 8:00 pm tonight when it gets delivered to me.
I hope it passes inspection.
The only thing it could fail on is the emissions.
The insurance and reg./sales tax will be minimal.
...And the adventure begins...

Thanks for the welcome.
One thing, though.
I clicked on the X300 link but I'm not seeing the "How To" thread.
Is it under one of the drop-downs across the top of that page?
Thanks,
-JS

Hello, Jimi,
Once a Californian, Always a Californian.
I can say that with some authority as I wasn't born here either, but I have no intention of living anywhere else.
Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.
